What's that horrible squeaking noise the 450's make when pulling out of stations? I remember them doing this when they were used on the Reading/Waterloo services whilst I was waiting at Earley Station for steam specials. I'm sure the current Junipers do not do that.
Bring back the 2Bils I say.

Only because the Southern were never in the position to have to use all the coal in the tender with their comparatively short journeys. :p

Well said that man. They had character even if the ride was a bit bouncy at times.

Not at all. The locos were so efficient they didn't burn so much coal. :p

So why is it that on one of the 2 runs I did behind Tangmere some years back, she had to be coaled during the tour from the supermarket car park at Morecambe..... Coaling at Morecambe 0077_800x600.jpg

So explains why Braunton needed water at Saunderstead in early November, on the way back from Bluebell (24 miles)… whilst sitting on the rear of the train..
44932 was on the front and didn't get much help from behind.

    Just for the record.
Re Tangmere - That's a fair point and we do know that in the 1948 Loco Exchanges, the unrebuilt WC/MNs were the most expensive on coal and water of all those involved. Neiether do good combustion and Tangmere go hand in hand.

Re Braunton - The issue there, as I recall, was that Braunton did not take water where it was supposed to earlier on, hence the top up.
