I am very pleased to be corrected. There certainly have been cases where, for one reason or another, the driver couldn't manage to shut the regulator immediately. Anyway it's clear that in this case the slip was controlled in time to prevent any harm.

And I echo the praise for the team at Carnforth. I had the pleasure to be on last week's WCME and it was a very satisfying day, despite the inauspicious start.

A slip may make for spectacular sight and sound but, like clouds of black smoke, it's undesirable in all other respects.

Glad you made it there okay Ralph, I'm sure that your friend would have enjoyed the spectacle.

It was a superb day out on the train, lots of fab noise from the front end on the steep bits and some spirited running at other times - many thanks to the crew and all at 10A who made it possible. Can't wait to do it all again.

    Cheers

    Alan

A couple of on train shots for today's WCME, firstly, approaching Grayrigg Summit and then at Greenholme - a really fantastic sound!!

    Cheers

Thanks again for the text Alan, and the confirmation that it was 46115, quite a few on the platform were not sure what it was going to be. The spectacle was impressive and the doppler whistle just finished it off....
And good to see you got some on board shots as well.

The Scot signs off the WCME season 8 March 2014

On my last visit to Hellifield three days ago, to see Royal Scot 4-6-0 No 46115 Scots Guardsman leave with the Cathedrals Express to Carlisle, it was substituted by the Jubilee Galatea.

Having learnt that the Scot was heading the last Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express of the season, I turned out again and sure enough the Scot headed quietly into the loop at Hellifield five minutes early in the weak winter sunshine, and I feasted on the beautiful sight of the big green machine.

Good to see a loco that at last looks as though she is at her best. I am not an engineman; why don't they momentarily ease off over that greaser?

Because if the greaser is operating as intended, it should only be greasing the areas where the flange makes contact and not the area where power is transferred between the tyre rim and railhead.

That's the first time for quite some period that the greaser at the summit has caused a slip, similarly the one near Scout Green regularly caused problems, so drivers eased off for it, but they do not appear to do so now and they do not slip..
Perhaps they are not checked regularly and run out of grease, then when serviced catch out the driver who was that way last week and had no problem??

Quite likely. We have a similar problem down south in the Templecombe area and on Honiton. One of the DBS drivers told me that driver knowledge of where these wretched things are is as critical as knowing the road!

My own attempt from Waitby yesterday evening, complete contrast to when I photographed the season opening with the Black 5 and B1!

One thing though, what's the reason for the pale line on the horizon?

I think Jonathon may have over used the "Highlights" tool.
