No it can't, surely your not suggesting part of the route goes through ENGLAND!o_O Perish the thought I'd rather invest waste 100's of millions to make a route that doesn't cross the border and that will need to be subsidised from day one.

    I'll stop now....

I think that just underlines how pie-in-the-sky this proposed line is.

And an uncomfortable one, I suspect, for the lads and lasses at Whitrope, Whitwell & Reepham, and perhaps even Llangollen and Loughborough.

Surely the English boarder would be in a spare room somewhere?

There was some speculation about the gwsr a while ago, but then again that might have been me reading the natpres archives...

At one stage it was one of the routes rail track wanted to reopen. I don't think it is high on network rail's list.

The Abergavenny, Hereford, Shrewsbury option is okay, as long as we get back Henffordd and Amwythig for Wales ;)

No chance of any routes being reopened if Sustrans are in the area.....

How does their estimate for reopening compare to the actual costs for, say, the Waverley route project?

    151 million for Waverley (Wikipedia!!)

Does the press release say 500 million Carmarthen to Aber? Hard to believe.

IIRC the total cost of the Borders Railway is around £350m.

Time will tell whether the Borders Railway will live up to the traffic projections used to justify its reopening, but at least it has a major city at one end, with the employment, business and leisure activities that will generate rail usage. The same can hardly be said of Carmarthen or Aberystwyth.

I see the campaign has already started in Scotland to extend the Borders line (nee Waverley) to Carlisle as a West and East coast relief route. Trouble is, numerous 'New' bridges were not doubled when built to save money, so unlike the Settle to Carlisle it would be of limited utility if so needed. Anyway the grand opening is on my birthday in a few days so given the amount of bad luck I have, that will no doubt be portentous. The numerous planned Steam specials will be interesting though.

The economics of reopening the Carmarthen to Aberystwyth route would need a very careful examination.
