Currently no 117 units operate on the mainline. As such there is currently speculation on weather passengers could ride in the front coach at all.

The reasoning behind the DMU idea, is because they are multiengine.... go figure?

There are a small number of single car DMUs of a similar type to the 117s which Chiltern in particular use, there doesn't seem to be a problem with passengers riding in the front coach. :)

I am intending to visit Swanage this Saturday for their LSWR weekend; as well as travelling I may go and grab a few photographs. Can anyone recommend a location or two, publically accesible, from which a decent shot may be obtained of a train in the countryside in the afternoon (for the sun)?

Field adjacent to the foot crossing north of the viaduct between Corfe and Norden - access to footpath off south end of Norden Station, or you can walk from Corfe by the side of the road then cross into National Trust carpark and take the steps at the rear.
Bankes Carpark entrance next to Corfe Castle Station for T9 which is facing south.
There are various public footpaths and bridges south of Corfe but I do not know what parking is like.

We spent the afternoon around Corfe for yesterdays photocharter with the T9.We planned to go on the paths on the side of the castle( access opposite National Trust Carpark) but didn't because the exhaust was poor due to the high temperature.

I will post some photos this evening.

If you paid for the photo charter ignore the following.

However if you you did not; Parasites like you are the bain of all organisations who are trying to cover costs and hopefully make a profit to re invest back into the project.

The movement costs of locomotives are mind boggling high.

This year I believe that the costs involved for loco movements and hire for the Swanage diesel gala is £20k +, if everybody grabs a freebee then these events will not happen in the future.

Oh, and please do not start saying "my photo's attract people to the railway" bullshit, the good people who pay for these charters photo's are just as good or better than yours.

If we want to enjoy our hobby, we must pay for it.

    Rant over.

To be honest I am tired of hearing this type of complaint.

You will never stop free loaders, so try to embrace them instead. They are a free advertisment for wherever they upload their pics and if you are really bothered by them, then why not go out yourself on the day with a bucket and ask them for donations.

I'm tired of hearing this well-worn excuse, as well. Some photographers contribute a lot to the heritage railway movement but there are a large number who don't.

Not sure how you would know whether how many photographers contribute or not if the sun is out i like to take photos if not then i am on the trains so personally do not feel guilty about taking a few photos also i donate money to various railway causes but never shout about it if someone gives a large sum of money to a project how would you know Swanage railway has various fundraising schemes which people who take photos may contribute to and these raise as much money as photocharters i believe the Bulleid coaches are supported this way

I would imagine that if people are taking lineside photographs of trains they are somewhat interested in them, and at a guess I'd say they too like a ride on the train sometimes too, and will therefore spend money on a ticket, maybe something to eat etc. plus if they like taking pictures of certain locos they must realise that if they want them to come back after its next boiler ticket expires then some money will need to be contributed, I'd be interested to see how much money is put in from those enthusiasts who classify themselves as predominantly lineside photographers. I have absolutely no qualms about taking pictures for free because a) I don't ask them to go up and down and do what I want like in photo charters, and b) I help restore the money making bits of the train - the coaches!

I'm not sure I follow the logic of your argument, photo charters aren't run for free thus the person who turns up on a charter and pays £60 is contributing more than the person who is freeloading.

Some people are free loaders others aren't. It is virtually impossible to tell one from the other. People seeing me standing by the rail side at say the MHR have no idea if I have bought a ticket or not. For the avoidance of doubt I buy a ticket and sometimes don't travel and only take pictures. Sorry, I should have been more specific. I was focussing on the photo charter that would not have gone ahead, nor would there have been photo opportunities for free loaders if some individuals had not paid for the priviledge. They (the freeloaders) were gate crashing a private party.

Nice pics Paul, thanks for sharing.

I wasn't commenting on photo charters, adversely or otherwise, nor those who pay to take part. I was commenting on the well used excuse that a free-loader who takes photos 'contributes' because it provides free publicity, an argument used by the original poster.
