    I'm resurrecting this thread to go back to the idea, mentioned in posts 66 and 67, of turning right at Upperby and avoiding Carlisle station. Apparently NR wouldn't allow that on 15th March, but it is exactly what the Appleby Explorer on 4th October is scheduled to do. This seems a positive development (subject of course to various caveats about counting chickens).

    I had heard that the short section concerned was not now passed for passenger traffic, but maybe VT are going to pull the rabbit out of the hat again...
