I'm not all that certain that this engine enjoys running tender first as I recall that in this direction it is tricky getting the right draught on the fire. I was once on it when it ran sweetly to Kyle but was then a dog coming back, tender first.

Will run fine in any direction if fired correctly. Yesterday was just very bad coal.

Yes indeed. That's what makes her a tad unpredictable but as you say, no problem at all when everything is in her favour.

The failure of fuel suppliers to deliver a consistent quality of product was one of the factors behind the decision to eliminate steam. Worse perhaps was the unwillingness of the railway companies to test the coal purchased and draw up acceptable limits for their suppliers. Could you imagine running your car on a fuel whose qualities varied as much as the coal supplied to the railways?
In spite of the problems faced this turned out to be a well enjoyed tour. Congratulations to those involved and shame on the company that supplied the fuel used on the K4.

I'm afraid your analogy for petrol/diesel and coal is way off the mark.
Petrol/Diesel are manufactured to a strictly controlled spec which can be adjusted minutely during the process, coal is dug out of the ground and can vary from seam to seam.
Coal supplied to loco owners etc is just a very small section of the market so suppliers are not going to spend money on testing it themselves when all other users are reasonably happy with what they get.
If a railway company buy coal then test it, then find it to be below spec, and what spec is that? what do they do with it.
If they go to the supplier and ask to get a sample, take it for test, wait a couple of weeks for this to happen, are they in any position to expect the supplier to have kept that stock to one side in case it's OK?

But I am told that if you pay top dollar you do get better quality. There are many reasons why that is a sensible thing to do and if that extra cost is passed on to the customer then my guess is that there would be no objections. I'm not implying anything about Saturday's coal and anyway, I would hope that the customer/supplier relationship should be such that if the coal is not fit for purpose then there would be financial redress. even though that is too late to help the situation.

Ralph, how come you infer that I am merely addressing coal supplied during the preservation era?

Even when the railways were a major consumer of coal as fuel, little was done to make sure that the product supplied fell within acceptable quality limits. True liquid fuels are easier to produce to a specification but coal does not need to be supplied within such narrow limits. It does need some set parameters otherwise you run into problems particularly with fairly unsophisticated combustion systems. Some engineers tackled the problem with larger grates, which is all well and good if you are building new engines.

On a preserved locomotive the evaporation required in day to day service is quite modest. Unless, of course, you are wanting to work on the national network. Then if you fail to boil enough water fast enough you can cause a great deal of trouble. Of the delaying kind.

Preservation does use a fair amount of fuel. Maybe the strength of a centralised purchasing body is called for.

The subject quality of coal supplied now is more relavent than the subject of the quality supplied in the days of steam, so that is why my point is concerning that, but I would like to know on what you are basing your statement
"The failure of fuel suppliers to deliver a consistent quality of product was one of the factors behind the decision to eliminate steam."

So I presume all the various documentation I've read showing that the LBSCR and LSWR (at least) analysed different types of coal for calorific value, chemical content, ash residue and other chemical parameters, and made purchasing decisions at least partly on the basis of their findings, must be an illusion then? Or maybe it was just a "south of the Thames" thing …

Just watched this - very nice! Considered a couple of those locations myself if I ever get chance!

11 on plus 2 locos I notice - how did the reversal go at Battersby, as I understood there was a limit of 9 for reversal there, going back many years?
