That'd be the first watering hole you happened upon........................... when Spamcan shouted BRAKE!! Lol!

 

The Devonshire Arms was chosen before we even left Kings Cross. Its selection of local ales decided it - Peak Ales (three of) and Thornbridge Jaipur. I tried Chatsworth Gold, Bakewell Best Bitter and the Jaipur. They were all excellent. Didn't think to look at their menu on the website to see how much things were.

 

Can't afford to eat?? Should have tried harder at school....

Yep. It was Ralph's suggestion prior to the trip for me to seek out somewhere far from the madding crowd. Matlock seemed to be very busy so suspect 'Spoons would have been heaving. Off to Shildon on Sunday so hope to sample a few in Darlington.

 

My mate Glyn is half Welsh so think yourself lucky he didn't start singing or digging for coal.

 

Of course it isn't unreasonable if you say so Mr Goldfish and I apologise for having the audacity to suggest otherwise. Although how they can cook mashed potato "on demand" in a pub kitchen is something I'm going to have to think about. We buy our sausages from our local farm shop and we can get quite a lot for £10. Very good they are too. Unfortunately the state pension won't support eating out in restaurants I'm afraid, i'm surprised at Mr Whitby "splashing the cash" in such establishments.
Oh, and I'll have a word with Mr DD about his unseemly outburst about the price as well.................sorry.

Mr. Whitby didn't indulge other than the pint I bought him in lieu of a taxi fare so his cash wasn't splashed.

 

Oh dear… sounds as though it's not the mash, but the chip on your shoulder you need to worry about…

No idea on which planet you live but £12.95 was way over the top for what was served. The menu said "large" but the only thing large - other than the price - was the Olympic swimming pool size dish it was served in. Three sausages - no matter how good - and a couple of scoops of mash are not worth £12.95. Cheaper food is not a "race to the bottom" as there are many fine establishments that serve top quality food in good surroundings at reasonable prices. But Chatsworth is a tourist magnet and they can get away with it. Had we not been pushed for time, I would have sought sustenance elsewhere but we were where we were and hungry to boot so that was that. The saving grace of the establishment was the fine selection of local ales.

 

Playing the man and not the ball again I see. Tut, tut.

 

Went to the local 'Spoons yesterday, Steak Club day. 10 ounce gammon steak, jacket potato, peas, tomato and mushroom and a pint of Hopping Mad Black Jack Stout all for £4.99.
Not the most salubrious of surroundings but that's excellent value for money when out with mates for a couple of beers.

 

I was replying to Victor's sarcastic comment at me, and make no apologies for doing so - it seemed like a rather unnecessary attack from Victor in response to what was I thought a fairly uncontroversial comment from me.

And oddly, you're whinging at me about a comment nearly identical to the one you fired at Mickpop earlier. Hypocrite much?
