    • Latest info on the move of Up 4014 ...........
    • Phase 3
The move of Union Pacific Big Boy from West Colton to Cheyenne will most likely occur during April, 2014. An exact date has not yet been set. The trip is expected to take close to two weeks.
The Union Pacific Steam Crew is responsible for the operation of all of UP's heritage equipment, and the rotary snowplow based in Cheyenne is included. The crew must be available to operate the plow, if needed, on rail lines throughout the western United States (except Donner Pass). Union Pacific does not want to start moving the 4014 until the threat of a large winter storm has diminished.
When a move date has been selected, it will be announced by Union Pacific as soon as is practical. However, the move is subject to many factors that can change on short notice. Anyone planning to follow the move should keep their plans flexible.

Apologies if people have seen this before, a 1950s archive documentary about the Big Boys:

A couple of things stand out. Firstly, I've never worked in a loco where two fitters can work in comfort in a smokebox! And also, around 12 mins in, some fascinating overhead shots showing just how much the front unit swings relative to the boiler when going round a curve.

Los Angeles to Cheyenne is 1063 miles by road - probably much the same by rail. Ray.
