Expected, difficult start regardless of what's upfront.

My video from yesterday, captured at Didcot North Jc and flying through Tackley approaching/at it's maximum permitted speed:

The chap with the brollly at Tackley seemed to get a bit of a shock - did he look before crossing?

Good footage but have you confused dates. Being a Southern folower headcodes are a major item. On 23 down train had disks not lamps and the return left Stratford with left buffer and centre. The crew might have changed code but unlikely.

Do you think the crew liked Braunton's whistle, maybe? Or were they just alerting Swindon to the presence of an interloper?

Looking at MrK 's video at Chippenham the down train had lamps. By the time it reached me at Kings Sutton it had discs. Must have changed during one of the stops en route.

As well it might, having started off DOWN on the LSWR main line, then UP on the GW main line, than DOWN from Didcot.

    Probably guilty on both counts.

As someone brought up on Bulleids since I was knee high to a Serving Wench, I can say with total certainty that the whistling said, "stand back and look in awe, a real engine is passing."

Probably checking the inferior engineering wasn't going to get stuck again.

I'm with KentYeti on this one. There are no more beautiful tones than a Bulleid whistle with the doppler affect.

A wonderful video. Starting with the superb three cylinder beat then an evening shot with 34027/45 at full speed with the rattle over the junction just creates the perfect scene.

Well, I knew there was a lot of inferior engineering down there, but I never knew it got stuck and presumably couldn't get out of Swindon loco shed onto the mainline.

Now, if that had been well known in the past there could have been a second batch of 30 Merchant Navy locos built and sent down there to help out.
