Viewed when passing, parts of the Carnforth site have all the makings of a junk yard.

It's an engineering site. What do you expect, croquet lawns and flower beds? :)

Well I'm an engineer and if it was mine it would have to be a bit more presentable......I'm not saying it should be like a Rolls Royce site and I appreciate clearing things up a bit will cost money which the site owner might not be in a position to pay for.....

I thought the skeleton of 34073 was used to provide parts for a recent repair to 34067 Tangmere that required 34067 to visit Carnforth for the work to be undertaken; if so then presumably 34073 is being retained in case further parts are needed as - after all - you can't just buy Bulleid parts off the shelf by a visit to Ashford, Brighton or Eastleigh Works nowadays.

In reply to Victor regarding tidiness - whilst it's a reasonable point re tidiness it's relevant to note that WCRC has a lot of rolling stock for which spares are equally hard to obtain hence the need to "store" parts in situ in the open as there's a limit on both shed space (where work is undertaken) and parts availability. Perhaps the "untidiness" is one reason why WCRC does not welcome visitors in order to protect them from themselves.

Not saying you are wrong, just seeking clarity: Which parts are you saying were simultaneously (a) recently needed for a repair on 34067 and (b) available as replacements from 34073? Judging from the photo, I can't see anything left of 34073 that fits the bill. 34073 appears to have wheels, cylinders and frames still all in situ (so clearly those didn't transfer) and AFAIK 34067 didn't need a boiler replacement! So what parts moved from one to the other?

Suspect that a start has been made on the boiler to keep his staff occupied, so it's ready to drop onto 34067 when the time comes. What other steam locos are being worked on at 10A except 45690 which is privately owned?

Yes, but that wasn't what Fred suggested - he said that he thought "34073 was used to provide parts for a recent repair to 34067" - I'm wondering which parts ...

I'm told 35018 is coming on rapidly....

don't forget alleged rumours of a engine of the class that will soon be free and is rumoured for a mainline return . Sense suggests having a boiler ready to drop in maybe ?

That does make sence, so what will we see first? 35018 or this other engine, or will it be both on test at the same time and as both are rebuilds, which will be which, whats to say both will run without any identy , now try to work that one out

Except as they are different classes there are differences.

The "other" is complete but requires overhaul. Having an overhauled boiler from a classmate would save time . 35018 was a partially restored and long stored barry engine which by the limited information is making good progress under the care of those at Carnforth

34073 was originally brought up north to the East Lancs Railway from the Mid Hants. The reason for this move was to provide replacement combination levers for Tangmere and, possibly, a replacement oilbox sump. If I remember correctly, a combination lever had fractured and broke the oilbox sump cover on Tangmere.

I assume it could be they have decided to start on the boiler first maybe as the steam rail tour market is seen as a good investment and only limited by the amount of Locos available and there are many advantages of only running one class of loco spares crew training.

The rumour earlier was the boiler of 34073 to be overhauled and altered as necessary for 34016. As the latter is reportedly still at mhr this suggestion appears unfounded.

If thats the case then the condition of the boiler on the 'other' loco must be known. Can't say I know the condition of both boilers though.

    Same owner too... Allegedly.. ?
Doesn't 34073 have rather a lot of spare parts and new connecting rods too.. Remeber it was offered for sale a few years back at a princely £300k, but touted as being mechanically near complete and with an excellant boiler...

Roll on 2017, big anniversary that summer, need all the Bulleids you can get..., my count is "potentially 7" ...34016,46,67,92 and 35018,27,28 just need 4 railtours two up, two down (maybe 1 as a VSOE) passing mid way, London -Swanage with loco changes from a pool at Eastleigh.. A std 5 just in case..

Or maybe 4-5 railtours from around the country, steam hauled by a Bulleid onwards from London to Eastleigh down the lswr and a big line up ? It wouldn't be a plandampf but it could be fun.
