That's as maybe but where is the evidence to back this up, you should know by now that you cannot make unsubstantiated claims on this forum without quoting a 'report'.

Currently sitting in a loop at Berwick with no engine. Water tanker u/s, loco and support coach last seen heading north in search of a hydrant.

I was in the middle of buying lunch after seeing 60009 at the Royal Border Bridge, when I heard it's whistle as it passed back through Berwick DGL looking for said hydrant! The passengers on the platform got a second look at what had passed them 20 minutes before and of course were convinced this was Mallard despite the UNION OF SOUTH AFRICA nameplates! ;)

And doesn't that just illustrate the frustration of running main line steam - i.e. unforeseeable problems? Track in a yard not good enough to allow safe passage of a steam locomotive, (I assume that is what it was), and a broken down water tanker. Possible you might expect this on a steam tour in a distant South American country, but in the UK?

Well, unforseeable problems happen all the time to everything, and running steam with the infrastructure gone is bound to have its issues. I don't know what you mean about track though. Loco back about 10 mins ago, presumably now waiting for a path.

RTT reports 43 late leaving Newcastle. I'm hoping to get some shots of it at York.

Was referring to the Cadder yard derailment although I admit with no knowledge of what caused it to happen. But this was hardly something that anyone would have expected and it was brilliant that WC plus ultimately No 9 was able to retrieve the situation.

So after considerable delays running at over an hour at one point because of the water issues, the trip manages to arrive at York a quarter of an hour early. And this is on the heavily congested network north of York at weekends that was mentioned as the main contributory factor for such an extended time in getting from Edinburgh to York.

Don't get me wrong. It looks as though the people on the ground on the day at NR and WC managed to provide a pretty clever solution to a potentially tricky situation. That's brilliant.

So why was it that MK couldn't have sorted out a better path in the first instance?

At a rough guess, contingency. Various operational stops were truncated until the last water stop hit the original window. A4 crew looked to have worked very hard.
