I have never seen a Bulleid do that before. Looks to me that the engine might not be balanced properly on its springs?

Don't know the cause, but for another example (from BR days) see this film, from 6.05 onwards:

The fireman doesn't seem too concerned ...

I would have thought that if the slide at Salisbury is what caused the problem it would have been picked up before. Remember that Braunton did the tour of the Cotswolds last Saturday and by all accounts performed very well. Surely it would have failed its FTR if it had wheel flats? The suggestion in an earlier posting was that it happened while being towed back from Bristol on Monday. I'm not sure how it would have happened - I understand that even if a steam loco is being towed by a diesel as in this case there is still a driver on board the steam loco but I assume that the braking is controlled by the diesel driver.

This did sometimes happen with locos (such as the Bulleid pacifics) which are fitted with steam rather than vacuum brakes when the proportional brake valve did not work as intended.

Well it is a flat top and probably the crew was just trying to get a flat bottom.

Presumably that was the 6.05 special. LOL!

Watching the bit before that, 41312, reminds me how myself and a few others got that loco for haulage at Waterloo on an ecs once.

It stopped some way short of the buffers bringing in the ecs for our train. One of our group, very quick thinking, shouted out, "get on quick, we'll get it for mileage when it re-starts".

So we did! About 20m of haulage if I remember correctly. Just about far enough for me behind an LM loco.

It's not the first time this has happened to a Jeremy Hosking loco. I seem to recall 60019 was dragged somewhere with the tender brake tightly screwed on as several volunteers from Ropley MPD told me at the time they were not impressed when she came back to the MHR with very square tender wheels.

Afraid not, we only came south on one trip but never went back north. Trust me, I've been wanting to go north bound for a very long time! The other times we came along the coast way route via Worthing, Chichester and Havant.

Gutted about Saturday, was planning to head out and see Braunton heading up Buriton on the return but will not bother now.
