Thank goodness, too much dilution has already taken place at York. If memory serves me correctly York is the National Railway Museum and should feel like it not a giant playground for children or to make more room for catering outlets.

Indeed, another place to stuff 'em and mount 'em. The last thing we should do with £10m. Now, if it had been for new V2 cylinders and getting a few more NRM locos back in steam it would have been a different matter.

Having visited the NRM last October I can echo Brunswicks comments. There already is at Shildon, some of the NRM inventory I believe. I do not think that yet another place would be beneficial to the NRM. Leicester got the approval to keep Richard III - although it was his wish and those of his descendants to be buried at York - so they should settle for that.

The GCR has told journalists today that if it goes ahead there will be "10 iconic locomotives" , a number of carriages and a lot of memorabilia on display in the Leicester museum.

When asked what locomotives will move to Leicester the GCR said it didn't know.

I am glad that they have not had the grant, the GCR offers little to the public it goes from no where to no where, if it gets any more bridges it will become an 8 mile tunnel! The railway has serious issues that have been well documented in public forms with derailments and crashes etc, why the NRM would trust them with their locos is beyond me!

Because the railway has a bloody good track record looking after NRm loco's. That is why they are trusted.

You must be having a laugh, how many re tubes did the 04 have in ten years I think it was 3, 777 is in poor condition you can't see the loco in the winter because of all the steam leaks!

How come the 04 got an extension on its certificate? What about the Stirling single? Butler Henderson? City of Tureo? Oliver Cromwell? Etc, etc etc. Those who understand locos must have more trust than you.

City of Truro spent most of her boiler ticket well looked after on the gwsr,I'm fairly sure, as such, we're now entrusted with the restoration of one of the nrm's locos. I'd much rather the national collection all stayed in one place, much better to have a shrine to steam where it can all be admired rather than having them in two or three places. Exceptions of course for working locos, before anyone pipes up!

I'm sure the money from a certain road haulier helps sway opinions too. CoT spent a fair bit of time away from G&WR during her ticket.

I'd quite like to see Leicester North come off, it will mean that some more of the collection I look after gets some better care.

Taking my works hat off, speaking as an individual, I am saddened that enthusiasts are "glad" to hear of a setback to investment in a heritage scheme.

The NRM has far too much rolling stock deteriorating outside, the more room there is to get it undercover the better so it's a shame from that perspective.

Thanks Chris, it isn't just about the "get it in steam" mentality, it's about caring for the rest of the collection. One V2 in operation or a dozen wagons, carriages and other locos under cover and being conserved or restored? I loved it when we ran the V2, but in terms of long term sustainability I know which I'd choose.

Fine, wagons and carriages then, but do you need a full scale museum building to get them under cover? How much would a big shed be? I bet it would leave a fair bit over for working on the contents.

Yes, you do need a full scale museum building to tell the stories of those vehicles and the roles they played. Without interpretation and explaining, there is no point in having them. The various developments of the last decade at Middleton, SVR & Isle of Wight to name but three show that good care and history can go together and provide an added attraction for the visitor.
