Very good. Full of atmosphere. Why is it that paths can be found for steam hauled trains up from Woking and not going down where the 90 minute trundle round via Staines simply takes time off that available at the destination?

At Woking it can be doing line speed toward the capital ?
Going the other way it's just clogging paths as it builds up speed ?- that said I've seen many stonking through Clapham towards Woking.

Maybe it's to ensure there's time to serve breakfast, where as if it went direct there would be one less meal to serve an extra hour in bed ?

I reckon its so photographers can get 3 shots before Woking... Then followed by the water stop to get a 4th

 

I don't think its either of those but the train planners mindset. On the rare occasions steam has gone down the main line we have got to Woking in 27 odd minutes, not that much slower than the service trains (23/24 minutes)

I would have thought that it was simply due to the fact that many tours leave at a time that is still within the morning peak hours. By the time they return in the evening I would have thought that most commuters have gone home and the network is a bit quieter. This may be a simplistic view but I think that's what it comes down to.
