I know. And most appallingly, a diesel move has a kettle on the back! ;)

Draging Tangmere tender first for such a distance seems odd. Surely the formation would be limited to 45mph rather than closer to 75 if going forward

Its only 45mph if the tender is leading (right at the front of the train) as the loco is dragging the tender then the 45mph rule does not apply and it will be allowed to travel at 75mph.

Warm weather, only a small regulator opening, not much fire, so no smoke and no visible steam, but definitely not dead.

Also the loco itself would have been unbraked if it was not in steam ?

Did look as if the two air pipes were connected between the support coach & 34067's tender.

On a Bulleid pacific, the tender has vacuum brakes, and the loco has steam brakes. Both are regulated by the air pipe pressure on those locos modified with an air brake system. But if the loco is not in steam then there is no way the steam brake on the loco can be actuated. Moreover if the loco is not in steam, it can not create the vacuum needed for operating the tender brakes, although it is of course possible that the diesel could create the vacuum.

She was leaving quite a trail of steam approaching Preston. Saw the steam a long time before we overtook her!

I understand that Tangmere has been moved back to Carnforth as all the equipment to do the repairs is there and the work can be done more easily there as well. Work should not take very long....

Hopefully 34067 will get a spin on one of the northern summer trains again before departing for duties in the sunny south.
