Patriot 45531 and Jubilees 45565, 45604 and 45694 were painted in a light green livery in 1948.

The current guise of 45699 has only served to reinforce the idea that a Scot in proper BR maroon as applied to the lm Pacifics latterly would be very attractive.

I think it's a great idea outshopping her in BR livery. The loco needs a fresh start after she seemed to be cursed since the previous overhaul. Hopefully she will get some use in the South.

I quite agree. The current working LMS 4-6-0s seem to be performing well and gaining a lot of prase on this forum, but they don't often venture far from their northern base. Seeing 46100 would be a suitable compensation. I guess she'd fit on most former GWR routes (although Worcster-Ledbury-Hereford, one of my favourite stretches of line, is a bit restricted) and the Bournemouth line is reasonably gauge-friendly.

45699, being withdrawn at Eastleigh, has a good Southern Pedigree…and presumably a score to settle with that location :)

The south needs something a bit stronger than 44932, but then 35018 is coming too..

I would think you will be more likely to see 45551, as a true roving ambassador for the British Legion and it is a 5x after all.

I hate to say it, but unless 45551 turns out to be vastly different from its predecessors, it is unlikely to be a shining star and a good roving ambassador on the main line.

44932 seems to be the West Coast's "Supersub" for the Southern Region at the moment. It has made at least five visits to Swanage alone. I rather like it , especially after a particularly good trip behind it four years ago. However, the 60mph limit isn't ideal for the busy lines south of the Thames. If the mention of 35018 in the latest dvert for the 2015 RTC Great Britain tour means it's not far from completion, I would expect it to step into 44932's shoes when ready.

The reality is that the Baby Scots were good engines when turned out new, but they didn't age well. Certainly in the 1930s they could out-perform their replacement Jubilees, and not many men complained when the were again diagrammed to top link work while the 5Xs were having their boiler problems sorted out. Even when this happened, a Baby Scot was a match for a 5X - at least, most of the time.

Unfortunately, as time and mileages increased, fundamental flaws appeared, particularly air leaks into the smokebox, which played havoc with their steaming. but a Baby Scot in good nick is a decent machine.

45551 has had a redesign on the smokebox door to eliminate the leaks.

Add to that that out boiler has been Certified to run at 225 if we wish. We havent planned to at this current time but it is possible.

In response to the comment by Ralph W [When I was through Crewe by train the other day I'm sure 6100 was outside on a low loader??] this was most likely either the 9F or 71000 that he saw on the low loader as LNWR Heritage were putting the 'Duke' undercover in the building alongside the Exhibition Hall, having first removed the 9F from inside this structure where it has resided for the past 3-4 years. In regard to Royal Scot, work is once again underway in the workshop inside the exhibition hall with the expected completion date now given as early 2015.

Royal Scot is back on its wheels now. So may have seen it while it was being re wheeled?? Also the tender frames have been re painted black leading to speculation that is may be going into a different livery when completed

Responding to LMS2968, I recall seeing the Bristol Barrow Rd trio ( 45504, 45506 and 45519) in their latter days, working the heavy cross-country trains at least as far as Sheffield, and they did appear to struggle more than their "Jubilee" shedmates, but as you imply, they were getting long in the tooth and maybe were rather run-down for the work they were expected to undertake.
Interesting what Gav says about the new boiler being pressed to 225 lbs. Has that meant any other redesign issues? (I say that just thinking about the wear and tear on 60103 when it was a "pretend" A4.)
Good to hear work has restarted on 46100. I wonder when the Crewe work will be moving to the new premises? Anyone any uptodate info please?

Rewheeling of the Scot took place a few weeks ago, it was definitely the movement of the Duke and the 9F that occurred last week using a Reid Freight lowloader.

No news on any movement yet. Just speculation..... lots of work at the dmd to complete first i suppose with the roof etc. Last i heard was around 12-18 months but that was not from an official source and could be pure speculation.

At least two insiders, E A Langridge and John Powell, commented that the Patriot boiler had small tubes of too large diameter, leading to firebox gasses going that way instead of doing their work on the superheater elements at high outputs. I hope this has been taken into account, as today's charters are usually three or more coaches heavier than the loads the Patriots and Jubilees were designed for.
