The book might have that date on it, but the story is from 20 years ago when 34010 was under different ownership. As Nickt says, SLL do not have any such plan.

And considering NickT is VERY involved with the SLL project, if he says there's no scheme, then aside from April 1 pranks, there's no such scheme.

I was on RTC's Cumbrian Coast Express yesterday, and I managed to spot what looked to be 34073's boiler (it seemed too small to be 35018's, and I would have thought 34067's would be in the shed). It has been given a protective coat of paint, and the smokebox has been removed- this was lying to one side, presumably for scrap as it looked badly corroded. 46599 could also be glimpsed in the yard.

I am advised that it was the original purchaser, Mr Binns, who proposed that Sidmouth should be restored at 34109, circa 1986. His proposal was not well received by the world in general, not much happened by way of restoration, and the locomotive was subsequently sold. That's the end of the story, and it's unfortunate that Platform 5's book perpetuates this red herring.

    Isn't 34067's boiler on 34067 then?

Erm... I believe that's what my post implies? Hence the statement "...I would have thought 34067's would be in the shed", ie. on the locomotive.

It seems 35018 might be a bit closer to returning, as its been provisionally booked for GBVIII next year. Usual caveats apply, though! Also mentioned on the 'What's Going On' thread.

I would love to see 35018 back in action. In a couple of years we could have a Merchant Navy feast on our hands

Looking at RTC's new tours, the first one with 35018 mentioned is the Dartmouth Express 2- on 18 October. Caution required methinks, but if people are confident enough to start incorporating it into tour plans, then a 2015 return looks more of a certainty, and a 2014 return a fair bet. Exciting times!

Anyway, a reminder of the condition it was in back in 2010... 35018 in store on Portland.

They have now also listed it for a few of the Christmas runs which are starting to popup.

As previously mentioned it would be in keeping with wcr tradition for a debut on the Lune Habitat 4/10/14 but I have no grounds to substantiate this.

From the tours it is down for ( which state 34067 or 35018) I get the impression that it is likely to be based in Southall, rather than Carnforth.

Didnt a lot of work get done at Ropley before it left to head to Portland for storage? I know it doesn't look great in that picture but often things can be deceiving!

Well, you never know what lurks beneath; long-term open storage and locomotive restorations don't really mix too well, but they were possibly lucky with this one. It does seem as though Southall will be the main base, but I'm sure it will see use elsewhere, as it will be WCRC's only Class 8. It might even mean 34067 might have a northern holiday...

I think they shall both be needed at Southall. There is plenty of charter work down in the London area for most of the year and there hasn't been enough loco availability in my opinion.

Just wondering if there's a chance of see 35005,06,18,28 all in steam together at some point in the future.

For the winter perhaps if there is not much northern demand.

You might get 06, 18 and 28 together but I am pretty sure 05 won't be back before 28s ticket is up.
