I don't believe Jeremy Hoskins has any main line registered locos under class 6, so I', m not sure this would be a priority> For main line work the bigger engines have more in hand and I think that's probably quite important most of the time.

I was always led to believe JB's first loco was 31874. The only reason I say this is because 34016 arrived after 31874.

34016 was the 22nd loco to leave Barry purchased by JB and Richard Heather in 1972 going to Quainton Road, while 31874 was the 48th loco to leave Barry in 1974 purchased solely by JB. From the Barry List 9th Edition.

whilst on paper it was owned between JB and Richard Heather, i think you will find that in essence it was in reality owned by JB, a similer "arrangement" was undertaken with 35018, again shares changed hands so that on paper richard owned 35018, but no way could he have afforded to have purchased 35018 on his own,

Mind you, he was interested in buying 80079 and the plan was for it to go main line.

Correct but 73096 has always punched above its weight and does not have the (theoretical!) constraints of 60 mph running of the Staniers. No restoration is easy and clearly JH has two major overhauls currently in train - 35027 and 6100 - but I still believe that not to get a 75 mph Class 5 back on the main line soon could be a missed opportunity. The route availability options would make it a popular choice in the south. But those with the money will decide.

Also the pretty extensive rebuilding of 6024

Not sure if anything is happening with 35027 though - there's been no word of it for a long time, and any (even vague 'is work still taking place') questions are met with silence.

Whilst no restoration is easy. 73096 has a lot going for it. It was recently re tyred. Has a brand new left hand cylinder and has had extensive repairs to the boiler during the last two overhauls. So generally providing the MHR have looked after it. The level of repair should be limited to the normal run of the mill things that a 10 year overhaul normally requires. Bear in mind also that AFAIK the roller bearing axle boxes were done at the last overhaul, these should only require checking hopefully.

I think that you'll find that the bogie wheelsets will have to be re-tyred. This was not done last time.

Has 73096 had a new set of rods made ? I remember it was stated that it was withdrawn from the mainline because of the rods.

No it will need some new motion made for it before it can return to the mainline ,unless a swop can be made with another non mainline std 5 that has the correct spec motion. until a new set can be made

What happened to 73096 when she broke a cylinder? Did the motion get damaged then, or was damage limited to the fractured cylinder?

Thanks 73129. Was going to give you a "like" for the photos but it seemed a tad macabre to do so...

Looks like the piston rod at least was damaged as well.

What ungodly forces even transpired for that to happen? That must have been painful to watch

Look at the photos of the piston. A core plug is missing.
