This popped up on the MHR website.

    LORD NELSON

Contrary to unfounded rumours circulating at the moment, The National Railway Museum and Mid Hants Railway would like to confirm that Lord Nelson is not being "recalled” and will be remaining at the Mid Hants for the foreseeable future.

    Seems like a bizarre rumour

How absurd, I have heard things regarding Nellie, but certainly not that!

I have been trying to track down the rumour and have no idea where it has come from.

Well, it must have become serious for a joint statement to be issued! I wonder who got the wrong end of the wrong stick and tried to make 2+2=5 And who was daft enough to believe them????? o_O

I was down "playing" trains on Sunday, never heard anything about Nellie - I was more interested in why Wadebridge was delayed leaving M4M with the first up service.

Hmm I like the way the NRM would withdraw Nelson whilst leaving/forgetting about Cheltenham.....

it would be a very strange decision to recall 850 as she still has a couple of years still on her ticket, at least its an groundless rumour,
the only way i can see 850 being recalled is once its boiler ticket expires and a joint decision is made not to overhaul it, in that case it would make sence to re call it back to York and for another NRM engine such as the Q1 , or the Adams T3 to be released for return to active use.

Yes please! - especially the T3 (although a bit unlikely)

Is 850 going mainline at any stage? I seem to recall the restoration a few years back, after which there were a small number of mainline trips, was part Lottery Funded with going mainline as one of the conditions. Did the trips done satisfy this?

    Thanks

    Steven

didnt the group that restored her at Eastleigh sell the mainline gubbings once she was moved to the MHR? so i would have to say that i think its very unlikily that she will return to the mainline but then you never know, i think she would need quite a lot of additional work at the next overhaul if the plan is to return her to the mainline, and the funding to do it would be very hard to find, where as an appeal to restore an engine that has not steamed in preservation, and an ex LSWR,or SECR design may fare better

Would it be so strange for the loco to be recalled in order to allow it go somewhere else? There was a time when it was the NRM's aim to move on loan items like this around so they got wider exposure (like the Super D, for example). I don't think the Mid Hants have a major financial stake in it (the overhaul was financed by the Eatleigh RPS via HLF) so they have no real claim to it. Why not send it elsewhere for its last couple of years?

The MHR may not have put a large financial input into 850, but they have put a lot of engineering input into it, De-snagging problems from when it was withdrawn from the mainline. From what I remember there were concerns about the boiler when it first arrived and apart from some minor work it has remained very steam tight.

The MHR cant be doing a bad job with Nellie if they felt confident enough to lend us Chellie.

Would love to see the T3 in action.... can you imagine the S15, the T3, M7 and maybe even the T9 all in the LSWR livery.

........... and they've had several years use in exchange. Why not run out its last couple of years somewhere else?

Because I am sure the MHR is due to undertake the next overhaul, why let someone use her now and then have no one willing to undertake the overhaul.....meaning the NRM has a liability on its hands!

but the problem is going to be getting the funding , if the MHR is going to finance it its going to be a big ask, ok the boiler was almost completly renewed at last overhaul, let me ask a question, what do you think will raise most from the public an appeal to give 850 another 10 years, or an appeal to return another Historic engine to steam, suppossing that its do able, i think it would be better to once her ticket is up, send her back to york, and let the MHR have something else , if the boilers ok on 850 then properly concerved it should still be ok in another ten years or so if its kept in the right conditions

I can't see why 30850 couldn't be retained by the MHR for. Another good reason for 30850 be retained at the MHR is Eastleigh Preservation Society are also working on 30828 at Ropley. On another note I wouldn't mind seeing 30850 being repainted in to War time black. Would look apt for War on the line and Xmas leave.
