71b & 85d needs are surely very similar? - medium sized simple, economical, easily mantained 2 cylinder cl 4 or 5 locos.

indeed, but Swanage already have a BoB and with 34072 to follow, is there any need for 34053, ever? I don't think so, especially if 34028 gets an overhaul inside 10 years..

    *Bites his tongue*

Speaking personally, each to his/her own on where Bulleids are concerned, but we are not in an ideal world where the 'right' size of locomotive survived in large enough numbers for everyone to have, so sometimes railways have to take what they can get.

Its a stroke of good fortune that the moguls are going to a good home, but it has to be said that they are an addition to the broader 'mix' of locomotives appropriate to the line, Bulleids included when considering that they visited on high days and holidays.

Swanage Railway 2014 or Chedworth on a Cheltenham Andover passenger on the erstwhile MSWJR in 1958!? Either way, a lovely shot!

I'll really miss 31806 at the Mid Hants, the last of the charming, mixed traffic engines in operation. Just big mainline beasts now, not my cup of tea

Should be yes, and is a delightful locomotive, but just not quite the same as a U-Boat

If only we could get 41312 to Swanage as well. Another ideal loco for the line, and it was a regular performer there in the 1960s.

Here's an idea with regards to 1806. Bearing in mind all these "New build" and retro rebuilds [in the case of some GW designs]. How about "unrebuilding" her back into a tank engine? After all at the enquiry into the Sevenoaks crash it turned out that most of the stability problems with the "River" tanks was down to the poor track maintance, which contributed to minor repairable problems with the engines riding characteristics. As they had been tried out under Gresley's supervision on the LNER and rode quite well even at high speed 70-80mph or so, though the tanks could do with better baffles to stop/slow the water sugging quite so much. As with Gresleys' V2s I believe the problem revolved aroung the "swing" linkage of the leading bogie. Whilst this report was presented at the enquiry along with Gresleys recommendations the Southern decided to rebuild the engines as moguls.

We still have a good selection of smaller locos under overhaul 41312,30506,30499,30828 and I wouldn't say 30925 is a large loco. I think your drinking from a half empty glass and not a half full glass. For me the good times are ahead and with any luck 80150 will be back in steam again.

You're counting three S15s as "smaller" locos? I'd hate to see what you classify as "larger"! ;) (Am looking forward to the two Urie S15s though...)

I always classify large locos being all Pacific's and GWR Kings and Castles.

When you take the bogie tenders into account, the S15s are surprisingly large locomotives.

I'm sure if the Swanage management want to borrow it for a gala or something their request will be dealt with positively. As for "getting" it if I write what I feel about that particular comment I will get banned. So I will confine myself to this: it is high time people stopped being so partisan and stopped coveting other lines motive power. If it becomes available (like the moguls) then fair game, other wise concentrate on what you already have.

So you (like a lot of us) will look forward to 76017 early next year, and 75079 in due course (I suppose the latter is large(ish) though).

I don't see why you take such great offence to that. If anything you should be pleased that someone is envious of one of your locos.

I quote from one of your previous posts

How is me wanting 41312 at Swanage any different to you wanting the T3 at the Mid Hants? Both unlikely to happen but we can dream!
