    A Thingy...
I spotted this Bulleid boiler at Carnforth back in June, and I believe it is that of 34073, smartened up with a prtoective layer of paint. It is slightly shorter in length, whilst the firebox is the key indicator of it being a Light Pacific example, as there are only five washout plug holes on the firebox side. MNs have six.

    That's a great podcast.

One minor quibble (and apologies in advance for the off-topic), but the reference to Churchill falling for the internal RAF politics is a bit off, the situation was more complex than that: although Dowding and Park did fall victim to internal RAF politics (somewhat - Dowding was past retirement age, and it probably was time for him to 'hang it up', although the way in which it was done was shabby, and not at all worthy of his enormous contributions over the prior decade), Churchill was not to blame for that.

Glad you liked it. The journo who got it in the neck from Clive James was Mary Wakefield who now writes for the Spectator.

This was what upset Jamesie in 2009: http://www.independent.co.uk/voices...e-last-thing-young-children-need-1816567.html (You have to scroll down a bit),

Thanks for the link to the podcast. Not telling me anything I didn't know already but it was eloquently put and a great riposte to that dozy journalist.

Heard on the radio that Clive James is very poorly - terminally ill I believe. Very sad news.

Whilst stripping down CanPac we have discovered French Lines (35019) numbers on the rear driving wheels and it got me thinking with the number of surviving members of the class and potential parts do we have at least part from every Merchant Navy ever built?

Remember looking at 35028 Clan line and noticing 35005 being stamped on one of the motion parts.

I recall a Mid-Hants news from many moons ago when 34105 was being restored from Barry condition an restoration report went through all the bits from other Bulleid's Swanage had fitted - if I remember correctly she had/has some axleboxes from 35018 and 35001 and some fittings from 35012 an 35017 and lots of other Light Pacific bits too.

34105 also has a Merchant Navy tender frame (3350) which found its way to Barry behind 35025.

When originally purchased from Barry 34105 had 35018 ex-Barry tender (3343 6000Gal version) which it was originally restored with but only to swap with 35018 which reverted back to her ex-Barry one. I understand that this tender was swapped from 35008 Orient Line after British India was withdrawn as it was in better condition and thus never actually ran with it in revenue earning traffic.

After the swap between 34105 and 35018 on the Mid Hants the 6000gal tender body of 3350 was sold to the owners of 35025, leaving 34105 with a hybrid Bulleid tender design of a original high sided Light Pacific style 5500gal tank on a long Merchant Navy tender underframe, the capacity of which must be unique.

34067 is another light Pacific with a MN 5100 gal tender frame (3130 ex 35020, 35026 and finally 35027) the original tank was removed and again a 5500 style cut down tank was built and fitted - along with a 9ft wide cab on 34067) the old tank was sold to the owners of 35006 I seem to remember, additionally both 34039 and 34101 took MN tenders (3348 ex 35005 and 3122 ex 35010 respectively) when the escaped Barry after theirs were removed and used as ingot carriers.

Speaking of MN part swapping 34016 had some motion from 35027 and 35018 had may bits stamped from 35011 both of which I imagine were post withdraw swaps at Barry as was the practice of the day

It's worth a mention that 35018 was withdrawn from traffic 50 years ago this month - a fact that I'm sure is not lost to those currently working on her at Carnforth. Whilst she won't make the half century to be back in steam, it'll be quite close, if all the rumours are true. At least there should be no discussion about livery when the time comes......or have I just made an unwise assumption!

I seem to remember 35006 having a tender built by a community project based in Birkenhead, so which tender (tank) does it have now?

35025 got the tank , 35006 has an all new one , its been rebuilt twice i believe, the original work not being up to the required standard
