Yes, I was thinking more of those dishing out the suppression of which you speak than those falling victim to it, : )

Its the same logic as :

Statement 1 - trains are known to the public by the public timetable - but the actual timetable (i.e. the working timetable) is somewhat different / the facts made known to the public differ from the actual events that occurred

statement 2 - I have no idea what the working timetable states - I have no access to it. / my sources would not appraise me of the actual events but I know they differ from the facts made public.

It may be my wording (using Scots vernacular) or your understanding of my text but I think the 2 statements to be entirely logical; but then since when did logic pre-empt a fixed idea that certain parties are always at fault when official reports (sometimes not made public) prove otherwise - as was the thrust of the thread under discussion.

Yes, its actually quite convenient that the FBU strike has combined with a heat wave, get two evils out the way in one fell swoop.

maybe such curious tastes are why the yeti is an endangered, some say extinct, breed.

Actually, working timetables are now published, so your analogy falls down. It is interminably irritating when posters resort to the 'I know something that you don't know, but I'm not going to tell you who told me, or what it is, or whether there is any evidence to back it up. I just know more than you'.

Good to see you regard the FBU strike as an evil.... not sure however that a heatwave can be classed as such.

For steam tours? they are an evil. And lets face it, on a hot day steam locos are less of a spectacle anyway. And on a 30c day who wants to be in an no air con Mk1

I guess it must be some time since you were in any early air con stock, most of the time thay are unable to cope with anything much over the low twenties. At least with the non aircon stock you can have the windows open.

Which then recreates the "good old days" when you stood by the droplight with your head out of the window. I do miss my commuting days when I could have my head out of the window when travelling at 100 mph but I'm not sure that todays H&S would approve. :)

And that does remind me of the daft story about three people who were asked what would be the single most useful survival item they would take to a desert (apart from water).
Person 1 suggested an umbrella that could serve as a sun shade.
Person 2 agreed on the umbrella because in the unlikely event of rain it could also be upturned to collect water.
The steam enthusiast suggested a carriage door from a Mk 1 coach because if it got really hot you could drop the window down.[IMG]

Brilliant! Mind you, if RalphW was steward, he'd probably tell them to shut the window!

When I were a lad, commuting on packed SR slam door stock, we used to DREAM of aircon. Get near the window? you couldn't even get in the blinkin door.

Anyway to get back to my original post, if one has to suffer the indignity of steam ban due a fireman's strike and the indignity of a steam ban due to the weather, surely it is better to combine the two and halve the issue?

Although no locomotive can be totally immune from the problem, I don't think any of the current mainline fleet have any 'previous' or a criminal record for arson! ;)

It's the year 2525, Zager and Evans are still singing and the 21st Century Rip Van Winkle has just woken up.

"Aaah, I'll just log onto Nat Pres to see what's happening.

    OMG..

That debate is STILL going on!.

Guys, wake me again when you get to verse two please.

    No.

To be sure you'd better make it verse four".

Luxury! We used to be tied t' hook on t' back of loco by our 'air, and made to push t' loco with our bare 'ands for 37 hours a days. When we got t' station, we had to clean t' smokebox with our tongue. Then t' passengers would kill us and dance about on our graves singing "Casey Jones".

And you try and tell the train spotters of today that ..... they won't believe you.

I think that a few of the recent poster could do with reading "Teach Thissen Tyke", available from Amazon at a very reasonable price.
