    Your mindset not ours.

We have some bigger engines because that is what was/has been available.

It makes sense to have a loco that is more than adequate for the job, and we often require 6 coach trains. The Ivatt will pull 5 coaches on our gradients and very few if any of our crews would have difficulty doing that but it is not a good plan to do this every day for three reasons:
    1. The locomotive will wear more quickly if used continually on heavy trains.
    2. A bad batch of coal or a bad day (and we all have them) for the crew is more likely to result in service delays if the loco is working near to its limit, and surely no one would argue that 5 Mk1s on 4 miles of 1:60 was pretty much the limit for a class 2. (I have taken the equivalent of 6 with the loco, but the noise was volcanic and there was no margin whatever)
    3. When considering the load limit it is good practice to consider averagely poor weather conditions not just the perfect dry rail.

I have NEVER heard anyone from the MHR suggest that the Maunsell moguls are too small for our railway or the work, so I don't know where you got that from. I have heard many loco crew opine that the bulleids are larger than we need most of the time, which is precisely why the majority of our fleet (admittedly not all of which is operational) is either class 4 or 5 - perfect for our line. That said, we can put them to better use, and work them harder than most lines (not all, but most).

Thank you for your kind offer regarding the Moors enlightenment. I am sure that our crews could undoubtedly learn from the experience, and likewise I am equally confident that the NYMR crews could learn from us too. We are always willing to arrange reciprocal visits with other railways.

Careful Dave, Buddleias can be a controversial subject on the MHR....
Back on Mr Bumch's moguls, I think the Southern black livery sported by 31874 suits her very well, I never liked Us or Ns in Olive green. I am hoping that s15 506 might return in black with Southern Sunshine lettering (is that the correct term for this livery) as I understand 499 will likely be in full LSWR colours!

I assume a move to Swanage is close? Tried to get some shots of 31806 on the Belle on Saturday but the weather was dull in the extreme.

    Ah well, opinions vary!

Incidentally, in the relevant DL Bradley volume there is a rather fine photo of 1625, ca. mid 1930s, on a train between Salisbury and Westbury. Olive green, no smoke deflectors (as I recall - it's not in front of me right now) and a train of about 7 or 8 GWR carriages in full chocolate and cream livery. Just a gentle nudge for those who seem to think locos and carriages always matched in livery! A loan to the SVR could do a tolerably good recreation if 1625 is outshopped in the right livery :)

    Pedant hat on.
Surely that should be "Southern black livery sported by 1874……." And who is Mr. Bumch? :)
    Pedant hat off.
I agree that it made a change.

If you really want to be pedantic then is it not "Southern black livery sported by 1874...."? :)

Touché. That's what I should have put in the first place and with numbers I can't even blame predictive text/autocorrect. :) Post now edited.

I look forward to seeing that. I believe 828 is to be SR green, and I think I heard 506 will be in some version of SR livery.

Am I right in saying 506 is the only s15 to have carried BR livery in preservation? Even that was for a short time compared to the years it was in SR green or black.

Quite unusual really, given the popularity of BR liveries these days. A refreshing change though.

I'm quite sure the late 30841 carried BR on the NYMR, possibly 830, though I'm not certain

I assume you mean 825! I don't think 830 has run in anything for 50 years now. I've never seen a picture of 841 running as 30841 but I believe the plan is to outshop 825 as 30825 when it emerges from overhaul. Still, I'm only quoting what I've read in the railway press. Volunteers from the NYMR may know better.

825 will indeed be returning in Wilcock's Improved Engine Green. Which is, I think, a pity, but he who pays the piper...
