Wow. Can you have six hours free travel by going from Crewe to Liverpool and back twice? I guess the staff don't have the luxury of that choice.

Diesel hauled from Crewe to pick up passengers at the various points then to Crewe to put the steam on. Probably as last year, NR saying there is no path for steam being hauled backwards direct from Crewe to Lime Street at that time in the morning. Unless of course 6233 has also been deemed out of gauge at Runcorn.................. We can only surmise.

Unfortunate that this is the case; I had been looking forward to doing some shots between Liverpool & Wigan over the next month...

I wonder how many passengers will actually use the morning and/or evening Crewe-Liverpool loops? If it were me, I think I'd head straight for Wigan N.W. and save half a day!

I would probably do the same thing (although I could easily say that since Wigan would be the closest pickup point to where I live). A 2 odd hour circuit from Crewe at 5 o' clock in the morning just to end up back where you started before going north again is something most people would almost definitely pass on.

On the other hand, if Liverpool were your joining station you would gain little by doing anything other than boarding at Lime Street soon after 0600 and getting off again at 2142. All very messy though.

Easier to get the service train to Wigan, 2 per hour each way all day... £7.90...

Am I correct in saying then, that the first section of steam working is the Crewe departure at 0726?

Looks like it and if you don't mind missing some steam mileage, as Ralph says, Liverpool folk can lie in bed for about three quarters of an hour longer and join at Wigan by using a later service train. More to the point, by baling out at Wigan in the evening they can be back in Lime Street at least an hour an a half earlier by service train.

No 9 putting in quite a lot of effort up to Whilpshire. Not just on the front for show.

A message for Mr Buseng (and anyone else interested!) from an inside source. Apparently this tour gained a box on the back at some stage and said box has now expired at Appleby and will be binned at Carlisle. So southbound run may be unencumbered (but what about the fire risk?).

You can't go round binning diesels like that.

AND, how did it fail, may I ask? Did anyone see a steward on the train collecting sugar lumps from the crisps white table clothed tables?

    ;)

Crisp and crunchy cloths with all the cinders produced from an A4 doing plenty of work. However reports say that the sick 57 is going to be draggef back to carnforth as it cannot be trusted on its own...

Here's a couple of shots from this morning at Bamber Bridge and approaching Settle with No 9 chuffing away:
