You mean, pick something, raise the cash, restore and operate it ? Let's put that down as a 4th option - I hadn't considered the all or nothing approach...

Well, there are plenty of locos waiting their turn on preserved lines, approaching a line with a suitable loco which if sold could assist with funds to support one of their existing machines might be an idea..?

Just doing further thinking aloud, purchasing 35011 would help out the owning groups other engine restoration and the community would own the only engine with 'steam' in the name..that truly would be good for steam preservation

I think your jumping the gun here, and need to slow down a little.
A need to come up with a concept first, and then find out what the resources are.
Then you can start seeing what available and start approaching people / groups.

7760 at Tyseley and 4588 at Paignton are still, nominally, up for sale. Both complete, run relatively recently, but in need of full overhauls so may be out of price range for NP.

How much would people be prepared to give? £25 - £250 - £500 etc
Finding out a ball park figure of initial cash that could be available.

The P2 project is looking for sponsors for individual components. I'm fairly certain the team would love to hear from you should Nat Pres as a group wish to sponsor something, large or small!

Drop me a PM if you would like some more details and contacts etc.

35011 is too far gone, theres too much to be replaced , 35025 may be a bettter option, but it would have to be moved from Selinge to somewhere where working parties can get to
In my view it has to be a loco thats future is in doubt that rules out 4588 and 7760 as they are quite safe the same can not be said for 35011 or 35025 or any other engine in the same situation,
One option may be as follows Nat press contacts the owner/s of the engines that they earmark, and put an idea to the owner if they are not in a position to restore the engine, that they sign it over to Nat Pres for a nominal sum with the stipulation that it has to steam with in 10 years we as a body have to get everyone on board and decide on a sutable restoration base, i would go for 35025, and base it at Eastleigh, that way members from Swanage, MHR, Bluebell IOW KESR could all get involved should they wish , the tender body can go up north and a new chassis made also, that way our northern friends can get involved small bits can be done at other railway centres and the idea would be that once restored the engine can be a roving ambasidor for the movement it can then visit other railways during its ten year ticket

AN MN is a non-starter as it would be too big for many railways.

ELR, NYMR, WSR , SVR, CVR, GWR Bluebell, Swanage MHR Didcot , i am sure all of these can take a MN , several smaller may be able to take one static, or in light steam as a gala attraction, what do you have in mind? bearing that it has to be an engine that otherwise may not get restored, because isnt that why we are looking at this? i choice 35025 because, a namer is a bigger attraction than anything else , being an 8p its not going to be underpowered for any railway, imagine how many you could hang on it on the moors say, or on the CVR :) so it should be a welcome visitor the Rebuilt MN actually isnt that complicated compared to say a pannier , larger cab, means you can invite shairholders onto the cab if in steam, but not working

    A Thingy...
As someone involved with the Welsh Train Project (therefore slightly biased, but my comments don't reflect the views of WTP), I would very much like to see any initiative by the Nat Pres community cut its teeth by supporting the restoration of TVR 28- a National Collection loco that is suitable for just about any heritage line, and something that hasn't been seen in steam for 20+ years. Even that would provide an engineering challenge as the water tanks, cab and bunker need sorting out. Furthermore, the Gwili Vintage Carriage Group has a number of TVR carriages under varying stages of restoration, so a complete pre-Grouping train could become a reality. Just a thought!

However, speaking personally, I'd support the restoration of another MN...

Personally that is the only option I would support.
