no room they still are working on the fleet of R1's ;) then after that they have to build a new boiler for the crab, fully out of copper, then start on 35011's conversion to an oil burning self condensing leader look a like the idea is so that they dont need a tender :)

thats one big problem, say for example you were to do the Adams radial, a very fine loco, anyway:) it would most likily be done at the bluebell, so anyone who wanted to get involved would have for insurance perposes join the BPS, not everyone would want to do that, some for personal reasons, the same for what ever railway you may like to choice then, how long before people drift onto other projects after all if i were a loco superintendant and i just had an influx of 30 new voluenteers to work on an engine that was going to take say 5 years, and i had one that needed putting back together and could be back on the rails in 1 year, i would try my hardest to get as many of them as i could to work on the engine most valuable to me. i would promise the earth, if it meant my needs were meant, and shrug my shoulders when they complain our engine isnt getting any further on. thats why it has to be somewhere where there is no chance of this .

I'm afraid to say you are living in la la land

First to buy and overhaul and engine you are looking at £500k plus and that is assuming an owner wants to sell. That is a massive financial commitment from this forum and its members

secondly this forum is broad disparate group with many interests . To find the one to unite all is like looking for the proverbial needle

you'll then get into the where to base it , we have a massive geographical spread so cue next hot topic of discussion

Then you need a volunteer base to restore , and operate , (see above point)

Stuart Reeder, Alfred roberts have joined the forum with similar notions of supporting their pet scheme . Nat Pres gave its damming verdict

It's not a 'pet scheme' nor is it a reason for me to be a member of the forum..

    it was just an idea...

But you were talking earlier about making enquiries about available locos. That's more than an idea.

The idea needs to be worked through, proved to be likely to work, and with people signed up to it before you start talking to people about possible purchase. Otherwise there is a risk that it will be seen as another Reeder/Roberts-type project which waste people's time and potentially have an effect on the NatPres forum by association.

I've already spoke with our admin and agreed anything like that comes under his banner..

There is an argument for finding a project to do before you can accurately find out wether you can do it....

At no point did I say I was going to ask people if I could buy their loco!!

Enquires usually mean 'we have an idea, could it work, would you support it'

Anyway shelve the idea for now.

It's looking like a non-starter at the moment, but that doesn't mean you can't go away and put together a business plan and come back later. The one thing that will kill it off completely is for it to be solely an Internet Project.

it might be a passing resemblance, but it was actually inspired by the USA design, much more so than 1500 Pannier was…as an S100 was used as the blue print, metricated and for Polish track work, anything can be made to look like anything if you wish and considering you could buy one for £8k fully complete with documented history (ok in Polish), size and dimensions are not that far from it, it's not too far pie in the sky as say .. 35009, i'm sure with your experience, we must agree ?

A JZ 62 would be a nice idea, and similar price, but chances of getting one are a bit slim at the minute, unless you where there is one for sale.. tkh's are 2 a penny.. even in this country there's as many tkh's as there are USA / s100's:

    tkh 2871 / 2944 / 3135 / 3138 / 4015 / 5374 are all here.

Right now I still believe we are in fantasy land for anything other than a red or blue box made in China in mass production with an electric motor..

    why not use forum democracy…

    open a Poll thread… ask the audience…

    1. Would you contribute a cash donation to a locomotive restoration by Nat Pres, without knowing what the locomotive was or to be ?

    2. Would you contribute a cash donation to a locomotive restoration by Nat Pres, only if knowing what the locomotive was (but i don't care which loco even if I knew) ?

    3. Would you contribute a cash donation to a locomotive restoration by Nat Pres, only if it was a locomotive of interest to me ?

    5. I would not / cannot / don't want / unable / unwilling or just not interested to contribute to a Nat Pres locomotive restoration at the current time

Option 4 could be the railway equivalent of Catch 22: in order to demonstrate that you personally have either the cash or time to support a new loco preservation attempt, you have to prove that all your spare cash and / or time is fully committed to another existing project

    Number 4:

People with the lucky number 4 are usually endowed with excellent management capability. They are good at summarizing scattered documents, making complicated situations simple and clearly handling problems.

we clearly don't need that :)

Oh, and by the way Billy, what I missed off my 1st post in this thread............. all this "beer money" you have now............. you get married. you have half the beer money, you have kids - you have no beer money, SOoooo all this disposable income you have now to support a return to steam, where will it be then?....... oh, and what about the rent/mortgage?.............................:eek::eek:

I would be more than happy to kindly contribute every month towards a project I personally prefer the big locos (pacific) but I know that it would a lot more than say a terrier/pannier tank or maybe even a BR standard class 4 (non tender) which would be more feasable really :) but the location would have to be somewhere in the south of England or somewhere easy for me to get to if I can help out with fitting parts.
