Thanks for that input. It just shows how unrealistic the speed limits on different loco classes really is.

If he slipped, and landed on that "v" in the branch some feet below. OUCH!

    Wouldn't just be a black 5.

The limit is 60mph, as the lowest speed applies

Fair amount of rain across the south today. Also much cooler. Does this mean that the next DCE will not be DL assisted?

Very appropriate words for something going through Bournemouth.

"The lowest speed applies", music to the ears of certain Bournemouth Gnomes from the 1960s! LOL!

    Hopefully.

Maybe there will be another West Byfleet S x x x E test by our West Byfleet fire tester first? But please don't go near Eastbourne to do it.

60 ? That was a bit high for a Bomo gnome.

Seriously don't forget that Bournemouth also had some very good drivers, such as Rabbetts, Hutton and Varney.

Hope not as I'm on it. Bit of a risk booking at this time of year I know but I've got a week off and haven't been down the Weymouth line since Clan Line's epic trip in 2012.

Lots of rain has drenched my garden here in Dorset but the dead grass does not rehydrate it just dries out, until all that dead/dry grass gets removed or rots away the fire risk remains. If the rest of the lineside up country is like that around Weymouth much of it is dead and/or dry grass. Wish that wasn't the case but regrettably it is. I don't think they dare risk it, not sure I would in their position.

With luck and a little help from a hazardous pollutant friend, 70013 will go to Weymouth this week. Whilst you cannot wave a magic wand and make these things happen, this must be one of the most obvious locations to install a turntable. It's been discussed before but there are just so many options if one were there. As a visitor attraction alone, it must have possibilities but, no doubt, Weymouth and Portland Council have no means to finance such a scheme even with "Visit Dorset" behind them.

Perhaps the answer is to stop restoring yet another steam locomotive, pool all funds and maximise options for what we have by creating the optimum circumstances for steam to remain on the main line. A T/T at Weymouth would be top of my list. Think of the pathing hassles it would save Network Rail for a start. Who can say that it might even persuade them to remove that crazy bottleneck entrance to the platforms as well. Just dreaming......

''Please be advised we have had to cancel this tour due to the National Fire Service strike on this date, which has led to Network Rail prohibiting any
steam hauled trains from running during the hours of the strike. The Dorset Coast Express is still scheduled to run on 6th, 20th and 27th August and
3rd and 10th September and there is still availability in all classes on these dates''.

Sod the turntable, I would pay big money to get a steam out to Weymouth Quay on the tramway! (did it as a kid (a diesel) on the way to the BR boat service to the Channel Islands) Ok I accept there is no way on gods earth a "7" could get out there without knocking the town down, but it must be possible to squeeze a "5" down there

Hopefully the generator won't be needed much, weather forecast predicts heavy rain for the entire down journey. I shall be putting my towel down tonight under a known sheltered spot....

I was lucky enough to have steam to Weymouth Quay but all the tramway options keep running up against more reasons against doing it rather than for. At least a turntable would be located where little else might go.

Funny you should mention that............. When we went on the 9th July trip a local paper in Weymouth had a front page story (with a picture of 5972!) about plans for a turntable being installed on the Quay line to allow more Steam Charter trains to visit Weymouth and use only one locomotive. WCRC were behind this plan according to the report (as mentioned in the Railway Herald item above).
