Yes, but there are external reasons why the people at Llangollen could not build the station at Corwen first.

I'm afraid I don't know the area well, what were the reasons? Is/was the station area land owned by the railway or a supporter or someone not particularly interested in the coming of the railway?

If you read back a few posts, you will see Bobs explanation, basically that there is an access road to the nearby water treatment works that currently penetrates the formation and needs to be rerouted.

Ahh ok, I haven't been following this thread very closely, just dropping in. I'd still have thought preparations and talks could have been held some way in advance, I don't know how long the railway has had an aim to extend to Corwen, but I'm sure it must be a while - I think the GWSR has already started talking to Sustrans regarding a future extension to Honeybourne, and that won't be for ages yet!

Preparations for the extension have been going on for many years, but sadly it does not follow that everyone else regards it as such a high priority as the Llangollen Railway do, especially in these days of financial squeezes etc.

I know the original station site at Corwen is occupied, is there any prospect of further extension?

Doubtful. There was a very low bridge over the Ruthin road in Corwen, which was demolished soon after closure and the dip under it filled in. The profile needed to bridge the road, or to install a new level crossing, should one be approved, would be challenging to say the least, and that's before you even approach the subject of the ownership of the original station.

One significant problem is the bridge over the road which passes the car park / new station. This was quite low and its replacement would likely to lead to objections. Raising the line is probably a difficult option. The old station is ocupied by Ifor Williams trailers seen at every livestock market

This isn't the problem you think it is. When the original Green Lane bridge was removed, the road level was raised because of the dip tending to flood during rainy periods.
Our bridge engineer tells me that the bridge could be re-instated,with the roadway being lowered & a form of pumping system installed to remove floodwater.
I have also been told that there is a gas pipe under the trackbed beyond the bridge , but don't know exactly where it is.

The bridge was too low for modern high sided vehicles such as tourist coaches.

  11. At 8.33, I know the DMU is only pulling forward, that the guy has given the signal to stop and, indeed, that the camera will inevitably give a slightly false impression of how close he is... but I'd think crossing the line that close in front of a moving train like that is not something the Llangollen railway wants to show happens on its railway! Especially when not wearing hi-vis clothing and clearly, by the way he shades his eyes, his visibility isn't ideal with the sun in his eyes.

Rather surprised that nobody looked through it and edited that bit out, it does look a bit unnecessarily risky - even if, in real railway terms, it probably wasn't.

Did you notice he gets off the train. Walks forward. And I assume checks whether the dmu will fit through the bridge hole.

How does that differ from say a fireman/driver leaving the footplate and calling a loco forward?

If you've spent a lot of money on your pride and joy, you too would make sure that the bridge is not going to remove bits off your rolling stock... remember the King losing a few bits at Paddington and Princess E too, on track supposedely in gauge after tamping???

Well done to all involved with the extension. The track work looks fantastic and beautifully engineered and there looks to be some more glorious views of the River Dee for passengers to enjoy. Can't wait to travel all the way to Corwen behind steam.

  18. Only 'quoted' because you posted the original link to the video RG.

The 'difference' is that he appears to cross right in front of the DMU when it's in motion (albeit stopping)!
My point is - as I explained in my earlier post - that in railway operating terms he probably wasn't. But it looks careless, especially to the layman. Which probably doesn't reflect well on the LR. You can't be too careful when putting stuff into the public domain.

The scaffolding forming the platform will be finished this week, but the ramp will be another 3-4 weeks & then all of the timber decking needs to be completed.
The timber surfaces will be having an anti-slip coating, with a line of tactile strips along the platform & the fencing & signage will be installed.
A path will need to be created from the foot of the ramp to join up with the newly laid path across the common.
Opening - as quick as we can finish !

I guess with all that effort , it is going to be quite a while before the proper station in the town opens. Pity
