Despite what you said about the weather I thought the first clip at Preston was great Austin.

Lovely shots Austin. As you say the only shame is that 45231 wasn't required to make much effort it seemed.

Thanks Stuart, it's amazing isn't it how you can stand for ages in full sun and then the moment the trains due.....

Thanks very much, from videos filmed today and the last few weeks they seem to work a lot harder on the southbound run

Did intend to Ralph but when I woke at 5.30 to howling gales and rain lashing down I turned over and went back to sleep. Steve did say it was down to a lack of stamina on my part!

Lovely stuff, did wonder who was up next to the wall (behind me) for the return. Oh how good it was to get that lucky patch of sun !

Two fine shots Tony, the Settle Junction is particularly timeless, but KS station has got a few modern additions that spoil the effect.

It seems to me from the videos that the steam loco was doing plenty of work, and the diesel only propelling itself and maybe one or two coaches. So this instance does seem a case of insurance rather than significant assistance. With the diesel present but not working the total load would certainly have been too great.

Or alternatively, with no diesel present the total load would not have been too great, so why the need for the 'insurance'?
