"Either fight or die" according to the squadron page on the RAF website.

Already been translated correctly by Matt35027. The history behind the design is the Maple leaves to represent the large number of Canadian personnel who flew with 92 in WW1 and the Cobra top represent 92 being one of the East India "gift" squadrons in WW2.

When they were all running, for a 'spotter' the Squadrons were not a particularly memorable set of locomotive names (or numbers to be precise) compared with, for example, the West Country destinations. That, of course, completely misses the significance of each one of the individual names in relation to the WWII war effort. So, it is really good that another squadron is on the path to heading back into traffic.

Another thing I find from the "spotting" view point is that I find it easier to put a number to a name or vice versa but not so easy to put a number to another number. So whilst anyone asking what was Croydon's number I can answer in a flash but ask me what was 229 Squadron's number and I have to look it up. For some strange reason I don't have this problem with 92 Squadron. :)

That's the problem in one! Perhaps the answer for those less directly involved is to rename 34081 East India Squadron........ [IMG]

There was more than one East India Squadron though but not one that had a loco named after it.

Just so - hence the suggestion, but seriously though.......... or we may end up renaming 34072 as Burma Squadron!

Good progress over the past few weeks. Having rebored the centre engine, new valve heads and rings were ordered to accommodate the now slightly larger diameter bore. These have arrived so will be fitted soon. Smokebox has had a trial fitting on the front of the loco and all looks good. Steam generator has been run up and tested. Output OK. Inside of tender virtually complete - it's been a very hot job inside there so well done to the lads who've stuck with it. Lots of filling and rubbing down on the outside of the tender so just about ready for undercoat. Last but not least, the boiler has undergone a successful hydraulic test. :)

Was the reference to Croydon a coincidence?

Very much a coincidence. Coincidentally, 92 were based at Croydon for a while early in 1940.

92 squadron's commander at the start of ww2 was Roger Bushell. Later leader, and one of those murdered, of the Great Escape. There's also am excellent recentish book on the squadron by Geoffrey Wellum called 'First Light' - he was a pilot in1940-41 or so

Any idea what the dates in this signify? (It was in the hangar at East Kirkby - did make me think of you Ian!)

My best guess is the period they were equipped with Lightnings...
