    Another engine it will be VERY interesting to see haul at least 6 on the 1 in 49. Never REALLY seen this engine having to work hard. I bet it makes a noise. After all, it's basically a Yankee tank with a Western nozzle!

    1501 has been on the Bodmin and Wenford as a guest - the climb out of Bodmin Parkway was testing; think it was load 4 but gradient is i in 38 or thereabouts and it is very curved. She was working!

    I think it is the length of line and curve on the NYMR that causes most fun on the 1:49.

    Don't forget the 875t steel train it worked she has plenty of power, the only thing that limits it is the water capacity especially if the steam heat is being used;)

    That has been mentioned as a potential problem as being near the limit with water for the 18 odd miles.
    Will be great to film it coming into Goathland from the 1:49.

    With a tender loco and 7 coaches, I reckon on 1250 gallons as a good average for the one way journey although it varies from loco to loco. I don't think 1501 hasn't got the power to manage 7 and it doesn't drag a tender so its consumption should be less but with only 1350 gallon capacity, it is still a bit too close for comfort for a full line trip on its own. A short (four coach) train might be a possibility as an early morning jaunt, though.

    There are plenty of options available. For example, besides double heading, there's banking, freight trains, station pilot, Pickering - Levisham shuttles to name but a few. People have been known to complain that there's insufficient variety at NYMR galas.

    It's pretty even whichever direction you are going. Pickering and Grosmont are roughly at the same level so the total climb is the same. You can broadly divide the line into six mile chunks. Starting at Pickering, it is six miles of fairly level to Levisham, six miles of climbing to Summit, six miles of downhill to Grosmont and, if you continue to Whitby, six miles of fairly level to the seaside.
    As to which is harder to fire, both directions can be equally challenging. The 1 in 49 is formidable, and you generally need the pressure on the mark, but it is a slower plod and over in fifteen minutes (all being well!) You can generally start from Grosmont with a full boiler and full pressure and you get time to recover once you get to Goathland. Going north may have the slightly easier gradients but needs full line speed and is a longer run without a break. You've also already done six miles before starting the climb.
    The six miles to Whitby may be fairly level but there are some tortuous curves that require steam on, even going downhill. The pull out of Sleights towards Grosmont is particularly hard, if relatively short. The timings are very sharp, as well.
    You need to come and see!

    It was the replacement loco from SVR who kindly allowed a last minute arrangement.
    It can do the trip on the NYMR line, it's just that it is on the tight side of water remaining after such a trip, as advised by a member of MPD staff who gave all the figures in gallons used etc.
    So the engine will be fine plus other options to explore.
    For me it's also good to see a Steam loco type that isn't normally seen here. Should be some good photo opportunities not having visited here or run in the past. :)

    If I remember correctly didn't 29 do a couple of full line trips at the Spring Gala on 2 or 3 coaches? If so then maybe the Pannier could do full line with 4 or so? Failing that I'm sure it could do Pick - Levisham shuttles or the goods train between Grosmont and Goathland, and it's always nice to have a station pilot at Grosmont simmering away whilst I sip a pint of something dark and frothy....

    I'm most looking forward to the 2-8-0 though......:)

    29 is well able to take 4 coaches the full length of the line and often does and can manage 5 with the right crew. Starting to get close with the water, though.

    I remember back in 1991 or so taking the family for a ride over the line and we had the Lambton 0-6-2T all the way from Grosmont to Pickering. I really hope to see her do so again at the Gala.
