Black 5 would be the most suitable loco for the gala!

How about a Hall or a 28xx ? Couple of them about ?

I'd suggest 6023 but it seems to be a bit of a sleeping beauty.

Would be nice, but cost cutting seems to be the order of the day, and why not as the gala isn't it appears being sponsored by anybody.........

As for 6023, it still has to go to Southall for weighing, before going mainline, and for whatever reason that hasn't happened yet.

This comment & that of Paul 42 are interesting but perhaps illustrate how those commenting might be confusing noise made with actual power out put. It's nothing whatever to do with age/date built.
As received from BR/Woodhams the several currently working Manors have a range of blastpipe diameters fro 4 5/8" up to 5 1/4" - a very considerable difference in the area of the top of the blast pipe & hence its ability to pass exhaust steam.
7812 has the largest and is possibly therefore the quietest whilst 7828 has the smallest size (as perhaps do some of the others) and is very loud but not now particularly strong in comparison.

That's interesting. I just remember thinking 7802 & 7812 were quiet compared with 7820, 7821, 7822 & 7827. 7828 didn't seem that loud on the WSR but there's some footage of it being VERY loud on the ELR in the 90s! One thing I will say is that all but 7802 & 7812 seem to make a slightly metallic tearing sound whilst these 2 sound more deep and muffled like a black 5 and have a whistle in the bark like a Hall. They can all put on a show, though. Manors are awesome. Don't 57XXs have a 4 5/8" blast pipe?

My comment was based on what is generally considered the best loco rather than the loudest. 7802 is also considered one of the best, while 7828 is not rated that highly.

I would imagine that they have quite a long 'throw' on curves?

I'm not sure how you can tell from travelling behind an engine how 'good' it is. The sound is 80% of it for me when travelling behind locos. Probably 15% smoke/steam effects and 5% speed and acceleration.

The trouble is a lot of this "rating" is simply pub talk!

MHR web site now confirms 70000 Won't be running at gala and 7812 won't be attending the gala.

Be interesting to see which way they end up facing..............

Suppose it a given that 1450+Auto coach will be nose first out of Alresford - I wonder if they'll utilise the cattle-dock for that? Given that the Model railway PMV will no doubt be there...........

Still a pretty good line-up, although I must admit, I'm a bit disappointed 7812 has had to pull out.

On the upside of having fewer visiting locos could mean extra mileage for the remaining visiting locos.

I wonder how far 1450 + the autotrailer will be allowed to go? Hopefully a bit further than Alresford & Ropley.

I think you've just answered your own question..........

To allow the combo to go up to Medstead would be nice, BUT to do whole line would not make economic sense!

I'm still intrigued as to whether they'll use the cattle dock for the "shuttle"........

I would think it's going to be the same time table we use at most galas. Which would mean 1450/auto trailer will work the Alresford to Ropley shuttles. It seems to be the time table they prefer to use at galas.

Ropley to Alton or Medstead Shuttles have been operated in the past using smaller loco's. With only the Autotrailer in tow 1450 wouldn't be taxed too much up the bank to Medstead.

One option may be to run the 14xx and autotrailer up to Alton on the friday, just a once only working, at a special fare, will she be running in auto mode on the shuttles? or are no MHR drivers passed for auto running?

I assume there's going to be a freight out at this? Presumably with the 9F?
