Well said bruv. I hope to keep getting up at horrible o'clock to travel behind steam on these trips. Looks like the Jubilee Requiem is going to run now and that's going to be an 0430 start. Almost with the owls eh?

There are several things we can always rely on, and your videos David is one of them, excellent, and the interlude on the Waverley a nice touch, how those hills echoed with the roar of SNG those 50 years ago...

Just found this short clip of Galatea through Warrington..

Many thanks Henry - a certain fascination to that part of the Waverley Route, even without the rails.

    Thanks very much :)

Many thanks Al - gricing with dry feet seems wrong somehow ;)

Thanks very much indeed Ralph. If there's one railway I wish had survived closure, it's the Waverley Route - and specifically the Hawick-Carlisle section. Quite envious that you travelled on it - do have any photo's from the 1964 railtour?

Many thanks Steve - thought the pony at Salterwath may be a bit inquisitive when I arrived but happily it was quite aloof. Must be used to seeing enthusiasts on a regular basis!

    Thanks very much, greatly appreciated.

Absolutely superb, many thanks for posting - that is the souvenir of the day I have been looking for. Now saved to favourites!!

Thanks also Ralph for the link of Galatea at Warrington - to think she had actually applied the brakes prior to the station too!!

    Nice video yes, speeding no.

Google The Ebor streak... There's a big difference between 75 and 90... This was the former not the latter.
Watching it, I'm not actually convinced its even at 75., maybe late 60's even.

Still getting it to hit mid 60's is an achievement considering its load, but it was gravity assisted as someone mentioned.
Too many 30mph S&C trundles, or climbs of Shap I think has dented the average LMS fan from understanding true speed behind a steam loco ..

Galatea was doing 72mph through Warrington if anyone must know, not sure anyone mentioned speeding?? As someone who travelled behind her back in February where she had one coach less and was substituted by a diesel at Hellifield on return owing to her dropping so much time, her performance on Saturday was much better. Yes she accelerated slowly, but she handled 12 on Pacific timings and dropped no more than a couple of minutes, much of which can be laid at the door of a bad signal check near Wigan.

She did exceptionally well then, can confirm as others have hinted at that 75mph was reached on more than one occasion

Ah sorry, I was behind the curve, were celebrating the ability of an LMS loco to be able to run at its designated max speed.. I suppose that's an achievement... Of sorts.

    ;)

I've got an idea for the LMS folks... Put some streamlining on it... Blue paint tends to make them run faster too :D Apple greens not so bad either... Just remember the brakes at Crewe..don't want to break any crockery.

Well done to the LMS, copying the GW paid dividends in the long run.

We went through Warrington at 71 and there is no doubt that it took to Preston to get the old girl warmed up. I liked the fireman's description of the fact that they had to manage the see saw nature of both water in the glass and steam on the gauge.

The name of Galatea comes from the Greek and translates roughly as 'she who is white-milk'. Clearly her reconstruction lost a bit in translation as her nature is not as pure as that now!

Yes Ralph. Back in our day we didn't have cameras did we. Had to make do with painting the scenes on our cave walls! :)

P.S. Interesting to discover in Linesider's video clip that someone has recently re-erected the running-in board at Riccarton Jct ... especially as the place hasn't seen any trains since 1969 and is, in any case, miles from the nearest public road!
Incidentally, I found the two items below in my loft during a recent clear-out. I had originally come across them in one of the derelict buildings on the, by then, long unstaffed halt, having alighted there during the final weekend of services. Incredibly, Riccarton was one of very few lesser stations on the Waverley Route that was lit by electricity and these had previously been attached to lamp standards on its platforms. The top one is a BR hand-painted version (I don't think BR (ScR) ever got round to producing any enamel totems for such an out-of-the-way place!), but the bottom one is a genuine LNER enamel example.
