Taking it easy past Lyneham on the return. In full sun though, which re-appeared mere seconds before 5043!

A real struggle on Old Hill this evening. Black smoke in evidence leaving Worcester and the effects made themselves felt to a worrying degree on the bank. PHEW!

My footage from today's run. Seen in the pouring rain at Hampton Lane Crossing, and in sun (yes, that's right!) near Lyneham.

Indeed. The coal was from a load of good old british Kellingly coal - it's a bit smoky but very hot. The issue at Old Hill was that we normally ask the signallers to let us hang on at Stourbridge until the one in front is well up the bank beyond Cradley and to leave STBJ on a green at the junction. In this instance we were in danger of delaying a following arrival at STBJ and had to leave the platform with a red showing at the junction turning to a yellow before we got there. We had already been stopped by the one in front at Kidderminster so did not want to be stopped by it on the bank and were having to go cautiously towards Cradley. Consequently we passed Cradley around 11 or 12 mph slower than we normally do. Loss of impetus on the bank resulted in a much slower passage than normal and resulted in a bit of slogging towrds the top. The engine certainly was not in trouble, pressure was just below 225, regulator about 3/4 and cut off somewhere just above 45% so lots in reserve but going carefully to avoid slipping and having to use the sanders in the tunnel on the known wet spots.

    Regards
    Bob

The first sequence, snaking around the reverse curves with a phenomenal exhaust, is really impressive.

Contrasting smoke effects in the City of Dreaming Spires and Lost Causes as the Earl draws forward into the Up platform at Oxford from the Up/Down Goods Loop, and then awaits departure at around 15.30, following the departure of a Great Malvern service
