Not sure if that one ever got off the ground. Rolling stock owned by the group dispersed at various sites including Gwili, P and B, Llanelli and Mynydd Mawr and private site in Barry, and some line side clearance has taken place but AFAIK the group have never held a lease on the line.

No one has mentioned the original Great Western Society site. Was it at Taplow?

They also had operations at Bodmin, Caerphilly and Taunton, and based some stock on the Totnes Quay branch for a while.

Just to add, the station building (which was the majority of the museum) still stands, though is boarded up. Shame as it is a rather lovely building. Can't see the old turntable pit due to new fencing.

They went some time before the Museum closed, along with a couple of former LT cars, one of which is, I believe, now stored on behalf of the LT Museum whilst the other was at the Pump House, Walthamstow (another defunct scheme) but I think is now at Whitwell & Reepham. Another item which left Woolwich earlier was Stratford Southern signalbox, which is now at Dereham, MNR.

Cauldon Lowe was never "preserved", it was taken on by a Private firm who granted the Local Heritage Rly (CVR) access to it in a similar way to NYMR Whitby services.

Oakamoor was "preserved" but had never been fully open with numerous restrictions on it. One day the line will return to here, but at present Leek is the concentration.

The Bromyard line still exists (the track is still there in the undergrowth), not sure if it will ever be open to the public though but it's all still there at the moment.

Didnt they plan a railway centre at Richborough or was that just Southern Locomotives keeping Manston there as it was less than a mile from RAF Manston?

Thanks all. I just remember going when I was young, probably one of the first times I was allowed up to the big city on my own! 4VEP to Richmond, then a North London Line train to North Woolwich. I suspect I chose the destination simply as somewhere you could get on a capital card.

Don't remember the Black 5 or Merchant Navy, though reading up on the history, I suspect that maybe I visited a year or two before they arrived. Shame about the building, as - 30 years on - that is one of the things about the museum that I have the clearest memory of.

I don't think the 5 or the MN were ever at the main site; they were kept in a warehouse nearby I believe.

Is the Pump House defunct? Their website says they are shut in 2014 but will reopen in 2015

Actually we're both equally right (or wrong!). According the owning group's website the MN was in K shed at the Royal Victoria Dock and the 5 was, indeed, at North Woolwich Station. Cheers, Ray.
