Just a quick word of praise for the NYMR shed shop. I've just bought a set of footplate overalls from there - ordered online Sunday evening, delivered Tuesday lunchtime. Can't ask much better than that!

Hopefully the ticket machine in Grosmont station car park has been fixed. Arrived there last Monday a bit tight for time due to the local bin lorry blocking the road through Castleton but had I not needed to go to the booking office and back for a parking ticket, we would have made the 09:15 to Whitby. As it was it departed as we were heading for the foot crossing at the south end of the platforms.

The NYMR is set to play a major role in the new film version of "Dad's Army", providing the location for railway-based scenes. The LNERCA's teak coaches are expected to be used for interior shots, with Q6 63395 (presumably renumbered!) providing the motive power. Filming is expected to begin in November.

The BBC has nothing to do with the new film http://m.screendaily.com/5078402.article

    A) As Matt35027 has pointed out already, the BBC are not involved in the production and B) as the film has yet to be made, there is no way of telling if it will be a pathetic rehash or a masterpiece of comedy. How about waiting until you've seen at least a clip of the movie before condemning it? Still, I'm sure you've enjoyed your little rant.

Most of the action will use Bridlington for the seaside town, which one supposes probably did have invasion potential - maybe in this version Walmington on Sea is now on the East Coast. In any event, the use of Gresley coaches for interior shots isn't that implausible - Gresleys did work on through trains to the South Coast, I believe.

Things move o. Dr Who is a much loved classic that gets rehashed every few years and nobody complains! (Well some do, probably, but they're just people who should get a life!

Failure is always an option, no matter how stellar your cast and production team. There have been some real Turkeys produced by huge talent and some gems from lower down the food chain.

It's worth pointing out, too, that the 1971 feature film using the original cast didn't translate too well to the big screen (imho). The running gags run out of steam over 90 minutes in my view, and it's a trait shared by most such adaptations.

What has the Southern got to do with it anyway?
Does it say anywhere that "Walmington on Sea" is in a Southern area?
The original series was filmed in East Anglia in general.
A number of rail scenes often used industrials.

Or are people just assuming that since the arrows on the animated map in the titles are in Kent then that is where the series is based.

I enjoyed the series then and now.
Its fiction but based on some truths.

Next we will have complaints that the cycle lamps are of the wrong vintage.
It is not aimed at "Rail Enthusiasts" It is aimed at the General Public most of whom could not tell what engine and stock worked where?
As long as it portrays a general accuracy I have no complaints as to what, where and when.

Use was made of the White cliffs of Dover for several scenes, thus implying that locale. It was also said that Captain Mainwarings father had been a '10 Bob Tailor' in Eastbourne.

The first "Dad's Army" film was unequivocally set on the Kent coast, but as I recall the setting of the series was for the most part kept fairly vague.

Mind you, that's not the only inconsistency. Fraser is an undertaker from Season Two onwards and has been man and boy, but in Season One (the only black and white season, seldom repeated) he runs a stamp collectors' shop.

Definitely on the south coast, isn't walmington on sea actually Weybourne or something? As has been said, they floated into the channel once! Think I may have series one on dvd somewhere, must dig it out...

Alex - if you think Weybourne is on the south coast, you need to do some more geography revision! :)

After a quick wiki search it seems not only am I making up geography as I go along, but also that they filmed in Weybourne. Most outside scenes were in fact filmed in Thetford, which isn't in fact on any coast at all. I think I better go and watch them again instead rather than carry on digging
