The Wight Locomotive Society had a base at Newport from 1967 to February 1971 before moving (by rail) to Havenstreet and setting up the IoWSR.

 

The North Downs Steam Railway had earlier sites at Higham (Kent) , Chatham Goods Yard before moving to Dartford (Stone Lodge) when during Winter 1995/6 they moved to the Spa Valley Railway at Tunbridge Wells.

 

Just to add to the North Woolwich comments that No.56 & at least two of the Manning Wardles at Ruddington came from there (some while before the place closed).

There's the original, Bob Symes-led attempt to preserve the Waverley Route, which according to some sources would have relied for its motive power upon a fleet of Kriegsloks. God alone knows how they were planning to get the things through Whitrope tunnel.

 

Wasn't there also a narrow gauge (2' 6") on the Isle of Wight?

 

The Peterborough Locomotive Society originally started out at the British Sugarsite in Peterborough (In between the Fletton branch and the PNVR extension) before if moved down the line to Wansford and became the Nene Valley Railway.

 

There was a site on the old Newquay to Chacewater line that was to be the base for the short lived Cornwall Locomotive Group in the early 1980s. Don't think any track was ever laid but it was where the old GWR Goods shed from Lostwithiel ended up after being carefully dismantled and was eventually incinerated, I believe. This was not the site currently operated by the Lappa Valley Railway.

 

There was also a scheme to take over the disused branch from Gorstage Sidings (adjacent to the West Coast Main Line near Acton Bridge) to the ICI Wallerscote Works complex in the early to mid 1980s which went under the name of the Mid-Cheshire Light Railway, if my memory serves me correctly. The group was made up of a number of members of the 8E Association, which was based at that time on the old Northwich steam shed assisting with looking after visiting main line steam locos. The project however eventually fell through, although a fair portion of the route was in a cutting so not scenically that attractive.

Further to my previous post and to answer the query from 'The Saggin' Dragon' with regard to the Dee Marsh - Mickle Trafford line I cannot recall if this was the same group that were involved.

 

St. Botolph's Sidings. That's where we unloaded 34081 on her escape from Barry way back in 1976. The move from there to NVR metals was over BR track. Can't see such a move being allowed in this day and age.

 

On at least one occasion a train at the Wansford Steam Centre ventured beyond Yarwell Jct. towards Kingsthorpe. There was also a train load of boats that traversed the NVR from Kingsthorpe. Not sure if the bit beyond Yarwell was ever part of the NVR proper or if trains were operated under licence from BR.

 

I'm sure the Narrow Gauge Railways in Hampshire book has an operational project on the IoW

 

Was this the Bugle steam Railway? Alfred (of Alfred and Judy fame) was there before the group there moved to Bodmin and set up the B&WR. Didnt that Chris Tankard guy threaten to torch the Lostwithiel goods shed at one point?

 

Interesting. I suppose it stands to reason that they would have got to the design stage, at the very least.
