Nor was 34081 the only one. 53808 also left Barry by rail.

I think we did that idea to death on here in the recent past. No one could produce any evidence.

Quite a few locos left Barry by rail in the early days.

The nearest I can get to a photo of the Newquay Chacewater line preservation site is this, which if I remember correctly, the lane in the foreground was the entrance.

Yes at the SVR's recent Gala I found out 73129 had visited Kidderminster before, whilst en route from Barry to Butterley cant remember what else was in the convoy though. I think what Spamcan's suggesting is that NR wouldn't let a similer move happen today.

That's if you don't count moves into and out of Didcot.

I did briefly think of that but how far's that? 2 miles tops? Then again 34016 was towed all the way from Hampshire oop north, so it still happens.

Has anyone mentioned Clutton? It didn't get very far. I seem to recall they did some work on the station and acquired a few bit and pieces, but didn't get the support of the local council.

I thank you sir as a little footnote I know that 80079 was towed from Barry to Kiddy by Hymek D7029 in 197x little did we know they'd both end up preserved there.

Reading "541 restored", it has the following to say about the Dowty site:

"In the summer of 1977 it was announced that the Gloucester to Cheltenham mainline was to be renewed for HST working necessitating the removal of the point work into the Ashchurch site as the cost of retention could not be justified. Without the mainline connection 541 would be trapped as there was no room to remove such a large locomotive by road. Even though restoration was only half complete a decision was made to transfer to a preserved railway where the Q could eventually run and pay its own way" - that ultimately turned out to be the Bluebell.

Two other interesting snippets. The first is that before the loco could be loaded onto road transport, it had to move to the Army site on the opposite side of the mainline where there was space for getting lorry in. Not quite a trip from Barry, but clearly a move by rail over the mainline, albeit for only a short distance. the other snippet is that the group restoring 541 also owned a GWR tool van No. 92. That came with them to the Bluebell but made the journey by rail as far as Haywards Heath, and only did the last few miles by road. Van 92 had been bought at the time from the Erlestoke Manor Fund, who were apparently based at Ashchurch at that time. I believe the van is now at the GWSR.

I actually have a Dowtys Ashchurch leaflet that I happened to see on Ebay a few years ago and bought it as there isn't that much information on the site out there. When I get the chance i'll upload it.

Forgot to add it gives a bit of the history of the society and a stock list. Some interesting stuff was there at the time and not just the locos. It was the Dowty society that preserved 9635 which is now at Didcot - http://www.cs.vintagecarriagestrust.org/se/CarriageInfo.asp?Ref=261 and also the family saloon 248 at Bodmin which of course had the crane come down on it during it's time at Ashchurch, there's a bit of information here about how that was saved by David Rouse (of 3205 fame) and Ken Vincent - http://www.toddington-narrow-gauge.co.uk/site/inmemoriam.html (for those who don't know the Dowty lot became the North Gloucestershire Railway so in effect still exist).

We may be at opposite ends of the stick here. 34081 didn't leave Barry by rail but traversed BR metals between the BSC ST. Botolph's sidings and the NVR at Orton Mere.

Aye but 34016 wasn't a Barry wreck at the time of her move.

This was done to death in another thread. The Kriegslok wasn't designed until 1942 by which time the Germans had given up on invading the UK as their attention was focussed very much on Russia.

I remember seeing a picture of an elderly rail mounted lorry at Ashchurch, but have never been able to find out what it was or what happened to it.

I am sorry but that just isn't the case 34016 was a fully complete loco, just with her external appearance suffering from a number of years in storage. MHR isn't the only line to have locos sat in a similar state!
