I don't think it has happened before with a component with known flaws. Imagine the scenario if a Standard 5 which had inherited 73096s rods had an incident on a heritage line, the operators would be hung out to dry.

There are loads of locos running on heritage lines with non standard components that are perfectly safe for low speed lines that are a world of difference from 75mph on the big railway.

The LH front coupling rod acquired for use with Class 4 2-6-4 tank 80097 was found to have a flaw (crack) in it. We were instructed by the technical people at Derby that it was not usable, even with a weld repair, and should be scrapped. That was in the early 1990s.

Probably the safest thing in the absence of research and analysis but wasn't 80097 being prepared for mainline back then so that context would have been taken into account perhaps?

Are motion parts routinely subject to NDT in the context of heritage line restorations? I assume its mandatory for certification purposes on a mainline loco, like axles are too.

So you contacted Derby to check whether it would be fit to use under the stress conditions of heritage line work?
The assumption in that case must be that a weld repair is bound to fail at some point irrespective of the type of stress applied. Wouldn't it be safe to frequently monitor the weld and act if it showed sign of change in condition? I could also see that a catastrophic failure might not be predictable though. Any experts?

i know that axles and wheels are, but i'm not sure if that includes motion, i think that as long as you can proove the metal spec and where it care from, and that it meets the mt275 spec, thats all thats needed, Bodmin had an NDT on its axles, and the drivers failed, so they were changed from 35009, but i cant remember any talk of the motion needing NDT testing, i must admit that when 73096 went mainline, it came as a big shock to those of us at ropley at the time we thought that it would need a full examination after the axles were passed, but all she got was a test run, and a trip to Clapham,

Far more of interest to MHR volunteers is the maroon TSO which we are gaining. I hear it's been used in the
    Hogwarts express rake of coaches.

I walked down the old trackbed at Martyr Worthy this morning (walking a client's dog!) -alas no viaduct has appeared yet, plus my boss' house was built on the station site at Itchen Abbas, so no trains to Winchester for a good while, even with the Potter effect!

    And?.........................

So now we have the "Harry Potter" bridge & now the "Harry Potter" coach............ what's the marketing slogan going to be - "ride the Hogwarts Express & cross the tracks at Ropley over the Harry Potter bridge"?....... o_O

The only good thing about that coach is, it isn't green!

The sooner we have a maroon rake the better........ followed by a blood & custard one! :)

I can't see us getting a rake of maroon and you can only dream of a rake of blood and custard on the MHR. What about a rake of blue and gray? Would look very nice behind 37324.:)
