Railway scenes were filmed at Weybourne, but why are people getting in a froth over the choice of location? It is common for filming to take place miles from where the film is supposed to be set. Most countryside looks much the same in the absence of recognisable landmarks, and to film producers the inside of vintage carriages all look much the same!

Count yourself lucky if they use a loco and carriages that even existed at the supposed time in question - it's by no means a given!

For the same reason people get in a froth about railway matters - Dad's Army has history, a lot of it around the Thetford and Diss areas of Norfolk (Bressingham supplied traction engines for filming for example), and there are those who think the film should also have used those locations...

I still don't know why they should feel any sort of sense of ownership. It was just a suitable location to the BBC at the time and I would imagine that at the time, and even now, hardly anyone realised that it was filmed at Thetford. At least the new company are actually using a seaside town (Bridlington) for some of the scenes, which is surely more authentic (if that matters!).

Yorkshire seems to be the 'in' place at the moment for film making. There have been quite a few films and tv programmes made there of recent time. My daughter was involved with a production, for the BBC, set in York last year and says that the area does have a lot going for it.

My own view is that remakes seem rarely to improve on the originals excepting for those remakes of former black and white films. Where films are agreeably just as good, in my opinion, is where they have the same story but told in a quite different manner. For example, Miss Marple played by the great Joan Hickson, is remarkable. I don't think other recent versions are at all comparable. Howsever, the older b/w version starring another great, Margaret Rutherford is just as entertaining.

So it seems, as far as a re-make of Dad's Army is concerned, the jury awaits!

This could put Brid on the map. I wasn't impressed when we called in there a couple of years back, the harbour area looks very drab compared to similar 'resorts' but it certainly has a lot of potential if the money starts to roll in. Furthermore, unbeknown to us at the time, the station is a gem, with a great bar and festooned with flowers.

‘Castle’ 4-6-0 No 5029 Nunney Castle will have her last day of running at the NYMR this year on the 16th October (tomorrow). 5029 has been running along the 18 miles of heritage line since she came to the railway for our popular Autumn Steam Gala.

The ‘Castles’ were first introduced in 1923, and from then until the end of steam were the GWR’s primary express passenger locomotives – 171 being built in total. 5029 ‘Nunney Castle’ is a 4 cylinder 4-6-0 to the design of Charles Collett and was built at Swindon Works in 1934 and takes the name of Nunney Castle which is located near Frome, Somerset.

During the first day of the World War II Evacuations, 5029 hauled trains carrying children being taken from London to the safety of the countryside and later in its service in October 1957 was used to haul the Royal Train from London to Gloucester.

The scheduled services are as follows:

    Updated 1109 15/10/14

    1130 Grosmont to Pickering
    1300 Pickering to Grosmont
    1540 Grosmont to Pickering

Please check for latest updates if you wish to travel behind this fine piece of engineering before she leaves tomorrow

That's not what the NYMR website says.

    It has

    http://www.nymr.co.uk/2014/10/service-updates-for-saturday-18th-october/

    Updated 17/10/14 1646

In the last two days no less than four steam locomotives have failed, with two standby diesels also out of service for repairs.

Although we can normally cope with one or two such failures such an unprecedented number at the same time has frankly defeated us. Unfortunately this means that the following trains will not run:

    11.00 Pickering-Grosmont
    15.40 Grosmont-Pickering

A bus service will replace trains between Grosmont and Whitby as follows:

09.30 Pickering- Whitby (train will run as far as Grosmont)
13.00 Pickering- Whitby (train will run as far as Grosmont)
12.45 Whitby- Pickering (train will run from Grosmont)
16.40 Whitby- Pickering (train will run from Grosmont)

All other services should run as normal.

We are very sorry for the disruption this will cause and hope it does not spoil your day too much.

It is hoped to return to a normal service on Sunday 19th once repairs on two of the locomotives have been completed.

    http://www.nymr.co.uk/2014/10/recent-train-operations-an-explanation/

I am pleased to report that locomotive situation has now improved following the return to traffic of two steam engines today.

This means that we have been able to reinstate three of the four trains previously cancelled for today, and expect to be able to run the full advertised service from tomorrow onwards.

The problem arose due to the failure of no less than five steam locomotives within the space of three days – three on one day alone. This more than half of our operational fleet, and although we have a couple of diesel locos as back up, one of these had a battery problem and could not be started.

There were different reasons for the failures, although the position was not helped by a recent change in the water being supplied in the Pickering area. Whether water is soft or hard can make a big difference to the way a steam engine performs, and while we treat water to make it as suitable as possible, analysis of recent samples has shown the chemical alkalinity to beyond the scope of our treatment. While this was only one aspect, it was a key factor behind the need to withdraw two of the locomotives.

We are very sorry for the train cancellations that arisen from these problems over the past few days. For anyone visiting NYMR during this time, I hope they have not spoilt the enjoyment of your visit.

I committed to two days on the Moors at the start of this week months ago, so I was a bit concerned when I saw the news of the loco shortage. The big attraction of what's becoming a regular trip north-east at this time of the year is the chance to get four different engines in a single day on an October weekday on a steam railway's normal service - don't think there's anywhere else that sort of variety is available so far off peak.

Even with last week's attrition, I knew it would still be a worthwhile trip: seeing the Q6 for the first time and getting a Cl.25 on the main (ish) line guaranteed that. But I did wonder whether I should head somewhere else for the second day if the shortage continued, as I could probably crack on all I wanted to do on day one with the smaller line-up. Wensleydale looked tempting (provided it was the 47 not the bus) had its Tuesday service not been cancelled this week.

Today turned out even better than expected, though. When I first passed Grosmont shed and saw 2807 and 44806 in steam it looked like the loco shortage was on the way to being cured, and that added an extra note of surprise to the day - trying to guess what would be 'un-cancelled' and which engine would turn up where. Plus it triggered plenty of shunting around Grosmont MPD, giving me a chance to see and photograph a couple of engines I'd never seen outdoors on previous visits.

Between those bonuses, plus excellent runs from the expected line-up of the Q6, 45428 and the 25, it's been a superb day and I'm really looking forward to being back for more with what looks like a full four-in-steam (plus Rat) roster tomorrow. Accidentally timing my visit for the two days across which a loco shortage was solved has turned out to be an inadvertent masterstroke!

Be cautious if going for these. I was very nearly stranded tonight as the Pullman set currently has NOT got its usual three non-Pullmans at the rear. Dare say I could have squeezed on somewhere but wouldn't have been next to loco, window open, chuffing through the night, so I abandoned plan A.

45428 has just arrived Grosmont on the diner still as Pullmans only and scratching my head, I think the only coaches to add to the diner are currently in Pickering. They have 25 mins Saturday between 12:05 arrival and diner departing 12:30 to do a shunt or the diner stays Pullman only (the two trains listed above). The Pickering set will be very short if coaches are taken from that set to add to the diner.

Then I'm here as I thought the final week would be all steam after the recent problems, but I see D7628 is out for the w/e, despite no heat.

The three Gresleys were added to one of the sets for a special this morning - an annual train run for a local school in connection with their sponsored walk. The set was then used on diesel training for the rest of the day, but appeared back at Pickering minus 2 coaches from the opposite end to where the Gresleys had been added, so I suspect a "master plan" is at work to swap which coaches are on the back of the diner and 3 Blood/Custard Mark 1s are lurking somewhere in the depths of Brickyard Sidings, waiting to jump out and attach themselves to the Pullmans tomorrow!

The extra trains are The Moorlander, which is steam and I believe the diesel will then work one round trip following this (the 12:45 off Whitby from Grosmont) to avoid steaming a loco for one round trip (Steve of this Forum was involved in working out diagrams, so should be able to confirm that or otherwise). The needs of this timetable mean steaming 4 locos without that extra departure with the diner, which is the same as the peak season! 5 would be a bit OTT for an October Saturday perhaps (although good weather could see August like business during the coming half term week!)

On 'Green' T/T days the intention is that all services are steam. On 'Red' T/T days, the 13.30 From Grosmont (ex Whitby) MAY be diesel along with the 15.00 ex Pickering. However, with the current steam loco availability, things can and will change. Currently, only 45428 & 61264 are available for Esk Valley services and two such locos are required so non-availability of either of these will result in D7628 being substituted for one of them, usually on the short diagram.
For those who think it is fairly easy to operate steam locos on a regular timetabled service, last weekend stretched things to the limit. 2807 was fresh of washout and spat out a mudhole joint so failed its steam test, 45428 failed its FTR with both a blown clack valve joint and a problematic AWS and 44806 came on shed for exam with a badly blowing piston gland and drain cocks full of valve ring bits so was promptly (and rightly) failed. 61264 was laid up with a broken driving wheel spring, awaiting delivery of a replacement. Little 29, put into steam to help solve the crisis, decided it didn't like its water and threw most of it up the chimney, despite the use of anti-foam. Even some of the diesels weren't available; 37264 was in the process of having a train heating boiler fitted and D6700 was awaiting a set of replacement batteries. That left 63395 & D7628 to cover four loco diagrams and 63395 was also having a bout of tummy trouble but was kept going. 60007 was also away on holiday to add to the woes.
