Have to wait and see, in the past 140MPH Pendo's, TPWS, OTMR etc etc, were going to spell "the end", I don't believe ERTMS would be insurmountable either.

I seem to remember that 1985 was the date decreed by B.R. for the end of mainline steam some years previous.

That is true, but you cannot deny that it has become harder and harder for operators of steam locos to comply with new regulations, and that is a trend that will only get worse. At what point will people say "that's enough?

Are you sure? There seems to be very healthy steam on the mainline today. Much more than one would have predicted not very many years ago.

We have the demise of SLOA and its "heir and a spare" policy to restricting who could run what to thank for that.

Very nice. I always think that BR lined black looks best on the 'wrong' engines. ;)

But is 45690 "wrong?" Some Jubilees were painted BR lined black but to be honest I have no idea how many and which ones.

Hmm. Good question. A few of them carried some variation on lined black with BRITISH RAILWAYS on the tender, but were any of them outshopped in black with the unicycling ferret?

Amethyst and Mars were. IIRC they were paired with Fowler tenders at the time.

Livery details for individual locos are in the RCTS book on the Jubilees by Ray Townsin.

    45690 wore BR lined black 12 April 1949 - 15 Nov 1952.
