The train running sequences were done on the GWR, NOT the Barry Tourist Railway. There were no filmed train movements on our line during filming.

The tunnel scenes with people on the ground were either done in the disused Barry Pier tunnel (where there is no longer any track) or at the BBC studios where we constructed a 30m length of bullhead track within a mocked up tunnel lining and portal built by the skilled BBC scenery people. Shots of this were manipulated to make the tunnel look infinitely longer. All very clever and so realistic that it clearly fooled quite a few people!

All in all a great project to be involved with - and very beneficial to our railway in many ways.

I had no idea that some of those scenes were shot in studio. The last Dr Who story to rely heavily on railway tunnels - the Troughton adventure "The Web of Fear" - was all done in studio, but the sets were so good that London Transport made an official complaint to the BBC because they thought that the Beeb had been doing location work on the Underground without permission.
