Have been advised by SD that this one (with as yet unspecified traction from the "Carnforth pool") has been cancelled, apparently due to a "flat" on the kitchen car.

Well I think that the numbers were low on it as well.

Don't WCRC have any spare kitchen cars or is that day particularly busy rolling stock wise ?.

I could be wrong, but SD seem to have their own set of coaches which invariably includes their kitchen car, which they own. It seems hard to believe that WCRC could not provide an alternative kitchen car if required, so I tend to agree with Big Al that maybe bookings for this trip were looking poor and it was thus decided to cancel it.

I think that the SD rake is the refurnished (meaning repainted) old Green Train set plus their own kitchen car. This set also includes a small staff/kitchen area in one of the brakes from which the Standard class passengers are serviced. I believe that explains how it is that SD is able to offer an 'at-seat' service for Standard class passengers that the RTC arrangement just cannot touch.

Slight digression but worth saying. On the Ely trip, within five minutes of boarding at Reading I was offered a coffee and five minutes later a bacon roll. That was the pattern for the day. Drinks were offered around a dozen or so times in all and that excludes the cooked pies and cake that came round as well. On a RTC trip everyone usually has to wait until the diners have been served before any bacon rolls come through for Standard folk and that could well be nearer to lunch than breakfast. So as an aside, it is easy to see why you pay a little extra for a SD trip and when it happens as it did on the Ely trip, I think it's good value.
