As reported in the 46447 thread today the East Somerset Railway and the Isle of Wight Steam Railway have announced that Ivatt class 2 41313 will be overhauled at Cranmore as a contract job.
The loco will be delivered to Cranmore in a few months time. The overhaul is anticipated to take 2 years to complete with initial testing and proving at Cranmore before its return to Havenstreet.

That's the problem with the IoWSR - a bit long on quiet efficiency and a bit short on froth and blather!

I have to say I really like the Ivatts. The fireman friendly features (e.g. rocking grate) were pretty unusual on a loco of that type. They popped up everywhere and were pretty reliable and effective, in my view.

That raises the bar on the overhaul of 41312...

Not really, she should be running next year,
    Now back on topic
this is a massive vote of confidence in the abilities of the ESR, and it will allow the IOWSR to restore W2 sooner rather than later, so its another everyone wins. 41313 will get restored, Cranmore get much needed work, and it frees up the IOWSR workshop to restore an engine that i'm sure they would be very happy to have working :)
As regards when 41313 is restored, if the IOWSR can somehow get 41298 back over to the mainland, for say 1 month, then a ivatt trust week end at Cranmore might be a posibility with all 3 engines in steam, and to help to pay the transport costs,of getting 41298 over from the island, and then returning both back to Havenstreet with a bit of networking with Swanage, and MHR, prehaps then a once in a life time only gala with 3 working ivatt 2-6-2 tanks could be a way to pay for the transport costs, as it could be split 3 ways and give the ESR, MHR,and Swanage very special gala week ends,

Nice idea - plus getting 41241 to join the party would be perfect, but I suspect it won't be ready in time unfortunately.

i was just thinking of 41313,41298 and 46447 at the ESR, then 41313, 41312 ,41298 at Swanage, Same 3 locos at MHR, and as Alresford is fairly close to Southampton/ Portsmouth then its an ideal point to tranship onward to the island, and in hire fees etc, it might offset low loader costs. 1 low loader to take 41312 to Swanage, same rig then drives to cranmore, brings back one of the other 2, hopefully the unit that brings 41298 from the island, will still be there to bring 41313, then once that week end is over then its a short run to Alreford, for a run over the next week end and then 41313 and 41298 are ready the following week to take the hop back to the island,

All three of the mainland railways that you mention are rail connected, it would be much better to move between railways by rail.

Anyway - having seen and heard 46447 on Sunday I have every confidence that the Cranmore team will do a first class job on 41313 and I'm looking forward to seeing it running on the Island.

not really practical to move small locos by rail these days, ok 41298 and 41313 will be air fitted, and 41312 is through piped so i suppose they could move as an in steam overnight move from Swanage easily enough, but from cranmore would be harder to route.

Surely if the Bluebell's Metropolitan coaches and West Coast's derelict pacific can move by rail then three working locos in good order should be practical.

Still that is 2+ years away in the meantime let's enjoy 46447 and (next year) 41298.

How about getting 43106 to the party to complete the set? :)

    43106, 46447, 46521, 41298, 41312 and 41313 would be even better. :)

Well gary, you have 2 years to make it happen, :), i would settle for just 3 ivatt tanks put one on a goods rake, and then you can swop them around to your hearts content, double headed ivatt tanks on a 5 car rake anyone:)

In 2009 that was Martin, I was lucky enough to have 41241 pilot 43106 up to Bridgo on the saturday evening. Doing my usual trick of not bothering with the working TT I got off at Bewdley to glimpse what I thought was 46443 in the distance. As the vision got closer it manifested itself to be 41241 & 43106! I usually try not to get too excited but in my little jump up in the air I nearly knocked some guys camera and tripod over! Motive power wise it was a rather nice start to the night :)
