That is so true. And if alongside the display of 34051 there is a note about where working examples of the locomotive can be seen in action then the NRM will have done everyone a favour.

The NRM could also publicise the Scarborough Spa Expresses,to get people interested in working steam now one way could be that for this a pool of engines, 1 from each big 4, we all know what the LNER one will be, but then you could have a royal scot, or princess royal, a castle, or king ,if one would fit, and a Bulleid the engines not being used could be in the yard so that the public can see the difference between a museum exibit and a working engine.

Or if it's actually repainted by next summer the NRM 47 with a note saying a WCRC example on SSE due to Notwork Rail Eastern?

In a way I think a trick has been missed, but understand..
some day a big 5 line up could be had.. all in original colour schemes..

a Southern green unrebuilt MN or WC,with the streamlined Duchess, GW King, Mallard.. and number 5.. 71000 the last big one of them all.

what are you are saying ? that 34051 should have been returned to its as built condition, the BR modifications to the tender removed, original tender raves welded back on, and painted in Malachite livery to be displayed in a big 4 set up.

I thought for one horrible moment (until I got to the Duke) that you were talking about a grand 'streamlined' collection, decking a King out with go-faster stripes and one of those smokebox 'boobs' the GWR stuck in the interests of looking like they were going fast…

21C151 in malachite would get my vote.

Presumably though the significance of 34051 to a museum like the NRM is the specific connection to Churchill's funeral - so presumably restoration to that early 1965 condition is called for. It's not as if there aren't other light pacifics around that can accurately carry Malachite green and the Bulleid numbering scheme. The significance of 34051 specifically is the connection to a significant historical event.

It is an under rated livery in preservation.
no one objects to 4468 being in LNER blue or 6229 being streamlined why therefore shouldn't a Bulleid be displayed as it's designer intended...
a 21C167 would probably pick up the eye of the general public more than it's BR green guise.

Whilst 34051 was in BR green when it hauled it's namesakes funeral train, but lets not forget what it looked like when it's designer built it, and when the Southern named it after him in the first instance even though the man himself shunned the opportunity... hardly a sign that he personally was enthused by it in life.. and an equally significant event.

I believe that an exhibition featuring as many of the funeral train vehicles together as possible is planned, which would make keeping it in 'as withdrawn' condition logical.
Wonder if they will invite D1015 to the gathering?

You have more power than I to make it happen on a preserved line , but for what it's worth you've got my vote :)

If the green train made a come back it's not too far out there to have a have a Bulleid in Malachite on the front at full speed... or even on the VSOE with Arrows and Flags.

21C123 always looks presentable at the Bluebell and flies the flag even if it's not in steam.

A lot of people forget 1015's role in this occasion it would be nice if this could be be bought to a few more peoples attention, just how would it be done?

I must admit, i was totally ignorant of 1015's involvement in the funeral train, i would assume it was used to return the stock from Oxford.
what was the standby bulleid incase winnie failed ?

i have just answered my question:) it seems that 1015 did indeed power the return working ,returning the stock and mourners to london after the committal. i assume to paddington . so prehaps if possible she should somehow be involved in what the NRM has in mind.

Maybe on the anniversary of Winstons Death, a re-run of the train using the VSOE could be run, have Tangmere run as 34051 for the day, and have D1015 return the train ?
