I noticed 4979 on a low loader at Appleby as I passed through at lunchtime today. I've just had a quick look at the Furness Rly Trust website and I gather she may be off to the Ribble Steam Rly. Good luck with the restoration - always good to have a Great Western engine up north.

Picture on Ribble Steam Rly Facebook page show she's arrived.

Apparently they are waiting for a couple of items to be completed with the workshop before she is moved undercover.
The plan is to get the tender restored whilst further parts are collected for the loco and then crack on with the loco itself.
    All forms of support welcome.

Good to see 4979 under cover and about to begin the long journey back to working order. While those big outside cylinders mean that Wootton Hall will be somewhat more restricted in terms of which lines can hire it out when compared to FR20 or 5643, I would still expect it will find plenty of ways of earning its keep when it's restored.

Wootton Hall is joining a railway site that is home to a phenomenal number of standard guage steam locomotives - over 30 it seems. The vast majority are industrials but this is quite a tally and unusual, or am I wrong?

No Ribble is mainly home to Industrials, though Andy Booth's 'A Class' has made extended visits over the last few years.

plus 5643 on loan to the Bluebell I think? It seems such a convenient location for a main line steam locomotive as well. Straight out at Preston with a full tender of water, hitch up to your train and off you go. That would save a number of hassles around taking water at Preston when starting out of Crewe.

There must be a reason why nothing is based there but on the face of it this is a 'no brainer'.

Wonder if it's the tightness of the curve up the bank from Strand Road? Was too tight for the A1 to attend the Guild Fest a few years ago.

Can someone please explain the rationale for the Furness people restoring a Hall? I'm not objecting, merely puzzled.
