No good pubs nearby. The city centre is only a brisk 10 minute walk from Shrub hill.

An hour would be too tight to get to the centre for a late pub lunch and back to the station . Last time the 2/ 1/2 hours went very quickly. I can home from Tyseley in 2..5 hours by car with a clear run, so a return after 8.00pm is fine.

On the last one with similar time in Worcester, it worked out well enough, 15 minute stroll to the 'spoons, leisurely meal and pints, then wander back to the station with about 20 minutes to wait.

    Sounds like the ideal layover.

How many other tours have a layover of less than two / two and a half hours?

A few but I would say it's not the norm.

No worries, much the same in my case until recently but have since discovered it's a really great town to spend time in, and blessed with many good pubs and eating places. This CAMRA website may help you select some pubs to visit other than Spoons. I can particularly recommend The King Charles II and The Pheasant in New Street, as well as The Cardinals Hat in Friar Street.

In a similar vein to recent posts, are there any cafe's near Tyseley where I could get breakfast before the tour?

There's a good 'Spoons right next to Foregate St station - The Postal Order. Just a bit down the road there's the Cricketers which has the best Guinness in town. There's quite a few good little pubs dotted around the town centre but not much around Shrub Hill itself (the closest is the Midland Tavern on Lowesmoor). There's an excellent pub called the Firefly on Lowesmoor as well but I'm not sure if it's open before 5pm.

If you arriving by train, turn left outside the station - there's a cafe a couple of hundred yards down the road. Sorry, I don't know the (or even whether it's still there - it's a few years since I used it).

There's lot of decent pubs on the Tything, Dragon Inn, Lamb and Flag, Cap and Gown, Lloydies and the Talbot but not all are open during the day and the Tything is a bit of walk from Shrub Hill (easier to get to from Foregate Street station though).

I remember a 60 min or so "pit stop" at Minehead last year.

Yes but that was the exception rather than the rule and down to circumstances.

Never claimed it was the norm, just answering Ralph's Q, personally I'd say 3 hours is "about right".

Agreed there are sometimes short ones but it depends on how much shunting has to be done, and how helpful the local signaller is.

And then there are the trips without a destination at all - e.g. The Scottish Lowlander - but that was definitely a trip where there would have been no complaints (apart from possibly the long suffering partners of the enthusiasts).
