I'm surprised that no-one was picked up the report on "another forum" that 78018 is going to the GCR to be completed and then stay on a 10 year loan. Is this a case of the rich getting richer (the GCR, on the face of it has no real need for it, with 2 x class 2s on their line already) whilst the poor stay the same. There are two emerging lines much closer to home (the Wensleydale and the Weardale [on its doorstep] that could have made good use of it. Presumably the line with the deepest pockets got it.

Not so much as who has the deepest pockets but perhaps the best engineering facilities perhaps? If the GCR does have a spare class 2 then there's nothing stopping the Wensleydale or Weardale hiring 78018, just as 78019 has been seen on plenty of other lines this year. If i was lucky enough to own a locomotive I would prefer to see it's home base as a line who has a good track record of restoring and looking after similar locomotives. As pointed out the GCR has two very similar locos and excellent workshops.

The GCR should be renamed "Mickey Mouse Land", 46521, 78018, 78019....

it's in the gcr weekly newsletter.

i can understand the GCR being fans of class 2s, they're efficient on fuel and can handle the required load at 25 mph on a basically flat railway.

No real surprise here! 78019 went to Darlington a while back for a visit, and if I remember correctly has run as 78018, so good relations have always existed. LSLG does stand for Loughborough Standard Locomotives group, so there will always be interest in running any standards and caring for them at the GC, along with the experience in overhauling them and maintaining them. Add to that the mileage 78019 and other engines (1744, 47406, 5305, 70013,30777) have done elsewhere in the last couple of years and have been maintained by the GC, along with the facilities compared to some of the other railways that are not geared up for steam at present and have no accommodation that would be recipients nearer Darlington, it looks like a good deal that suits everyone.

There is also the historical angle, from the winter of 1955 at Blea when 18 and 19 were involved together?

!9 and 18 did meet up last year at Kirkby Stephen.

But it was 78019 and Snowplough 18 the Star of Snowdrift at Bleath Ghyll
78018 was also due to attend but was not ready for a move I believe. That would have been the reunion of all 3 featured vehicles from the film.

In this world of regulation and importance of good engineering it is natural to give work to those who have proved they can do it properly. That is one reason why we accepted the offer of a base for the 'Clan' at GCR. When 78018 leaves we will be ready to take over! Mind, that is not to say that others are not capable engineers as well.
