This season some football clubs have occasionally allowed serving members of the armed forces in for just a fiver or given completely free admittance as a gesture of thanks for their efforts & sacrifices. Have any preserved lines tried or even considered such a gesture as (say) one free return trip please?

i can understand the multi billion pound football clubs doing this, but....... railways are all regestered charities. and although its a nice gesture your not really gaining anything. maybe a bit of publicity and a few cups of tea in the buffet. At the end of the day the members of the armed forces (who do a fantastic job) are being paid and know what there doing when they join.

Last year the Swanage Railway offered a discount of 25% on normal single and return fares during the town's Veterans Weekend - on production of their Armed Forces Veterans Badge. I haven't heard what's happening this year but suspect we might do the same again on 19th & 20th June. Hoping for the same fine weather we've experienced during the past two years' Veterans Weekend.
The organisers have arranged quite a few events over the weekend including Services (and other Charities) stalls, Military Displays, "Disaster Relief Kitchen" plus Live music & dancing.
New for this year - Shore Road will be the venue for a 1940s style 'Street Party' (Period dress a must!). The usual March Pasts, accompanied by at least a couple of Military Bands, followed by a parade of World War II vehicles will also take place.

I think for a weekend, as Buzby says, could be a good idea, and could also lead to some very useful publicity. Got to look at the bigger picture...

Anyhow, many railways already offer discounts for a variety of other things, eg BR priv.

Your average serving squaddie is probably into his football; might not be into railways in the same way.

The Severn Valley are offering a discount on prebooked tickets for midweek tickets throughout june & july (saving £3.50 off the standard fare!) more details on their website but I dont think we have ever done the armed forces thing.

I think it would be an excellent idea to offer discounts to members of the Armed Forces. I doubt the take up would be huge but it would generate very good publicity IMHO.
