Aye, we can only guess what Steve Davies felt like.
I would think that FS is a "delicate" issue at this time and the last thing that's needed is wild imaginations and "if this happens" etc, bandied about on Nat. Pres.
It's similar to Carnforth (note SIMILAR) when there's something to announce, then we'll know and the rumourmongers can go back to bed.

I see there is a programme on Monday on BBC2 at 9pm entitled 'The Flying Scotsman - A Rail Romance', the story of the Nation's love affair with this famous locomotive.

I wonder if we'll learn anything new?

Probally not, only that its bancrupted every single owner except Waterman, he knew when to bail out , its not the licence to print money some people thought it was, they bought it thinking they could make money from it and ended up losing it all.
    .
Some people probally did profit from their involvement with it,but in the end i dont think anyone can honestly say they made a fortune from it. i just hope the bean counters at the NRM dont fall into the same trap

The mistake some previous owners made was to think they could make money from it. 4472 is just a steam loco like any other and so its running costs are comparable with others of similar size, and it could probably earn more or less enough to cover its keep, but not enoug to cover all the hangers on. Presumably this won't be a problem under NRM ownership.

Won't it? I guess that depends on what you mean by 'hangers on'?

According to one mag, it is said a "leaked source" claims the FCP report recommendation is to retire the engine afterall.

I wonder on what basis they (allegedly) make that recommendation. FS is close to being completed, and even the cylinder issue (if it really is an issue) can be overcome, so were FCP asked to assess the financial aspects as well as the engineering state of the loco?

If this is correct, then it bears out what i have been saying, that the treasury are running the NRM, and have shut the purse strings.

So that must mean no return to steam of any more NRM engines unless its done using private funding . this might be why the NRM are not talking to the press, if you thought Steve Davis got it bad, wait till this hits the news stands. whats next, a massive clear out of museum artifacts to raise funds for the museum ?

Sod that waiting around for facts lark, lets start speculating hopefully about a Gov Sponsored Newbuild and then start a cycle of arguments about boiler pressures/ double chimneys/smoke deflectors/ numbers/liveries / tenders etc...

Thats assuming there will be any official announcement, what i expect is that there will no announcement and that 4472 will be quitely put back together then put on display if thats not already happerning . why do i think this, because after the mauling steve Davis got, no person at thr NRM will want to have to be the one to announce it. what will be said is that the engines return to steam will be delayed and in the meantime she will for a short period will go on display

We are the owners! As a public sector employee, much as I love steam I hope that justifiable and auditable decisions are taken rather than throwing more money at what may well be mission impossible. Hard to say as a steam fan but it isn't essential that FS steams again.

It depends on just how much money. No doubt FCP have examined FS to within a thou of its life and found inaccuracies, but the question is whether the inaccuracies are sufficiently significant to the operation of the loco to require further remedial work.

No problem then. I'll fund it. But please keep the lid on for now because we're not quite ready for the official announcement.
